1986 Topps Football rack pack - any pattern/sequence to look for

I've read some thread on here where some of you mention the pattern/sequence of rack packs. Which ones might or might not have a certain card of value, in this case the Rice, Young or Smith rookies. So I was wondering if there is any sequence I should look for in 1986 or is this information confidential?, if it is I understand just thought I would ask. I have 10 rack packs that I fogot I had and came across them this weekend as I organizing my collection. Thought that I may rip a few if there is a good shot at pulling a good rookie. thanks Craig

FWIW... I haven't seen anyone give away their sequencing cheat sheets, but if you post scans or list the front cards on each rack there have been several helpful people to indicate which racks likely contain stars/rookies. That has mostly been on 70s baseball racks, but I would guess someone here knows the 86 football as well.

If it were me, I'd rip them all, but I don't have much self control with unopened image

What will you do with the other racks if you do target the ones with the rookies and open them?

Sell them on here or Ebay. I have a major problem with doing something like this. In my opinion, it is no better that the guy that sits on the floor in Walmart/Target and feels up all the packs. I would not trust anyone that would even ask what the OP asked about.

I find this to be a very interesting topic. I am by no means passing judgment, but isn't it interesting how many members seem to know the sequence of racks/cellos? It's great information to have when trying to determine if a pack is legit, but it could also mean those members know what card(s) are likely in the pack. James, you specifically reference the lack of trust you would have in the poster based on asking the question...would you also have that same lack of trust in ANYONE that knows the sequence of packs/racks? I think it's safe to assume that very few people, if any, would sell a rack they knew had a star or rookie or very desirable card inside, based on knowing he sequencing. Again, this is just food for thought - and why I am very leery of buying racks or cellos (from ANYONE) not in sealed case form.
  • I have multiple PDF files with sequencing for baseball, football and basketball from 1977 through 1993. Not every year and every sport but a significant mixture of all of those 3. The only time I use them is if I am going to a show or buying specific packs listed on eBay that I intend to bust.

Not sure about 80s football racks, but sequencing for 70s/80s baseball is NOT guaranteed as to what cards you will find, only that it will be possible for a card to be found in said sequence.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

That too. 86 Topps football was also similar to it's 86 baseball counterpart (mainly wax) in that the sequence often flipped regularly. So, no guarantee of consistent sequencing for more than 3 or 4 cards. However, you can tell in racks and cellos if the sequence flips.
  • thanks for the responses I appreciate what James is saying, in fact I bought these from a dealer in a card show back in the mid-90s, I only know that becasue I put the date and price on them when Ibouhgt them. Anyway who knows he may have sorted thru them all already, almost 30 yrs ago. So I may invite my brothers over and have a rip party and we'll see what we get. Hopes arent to high but you never know the dealer I bought these from may have been an honest guy. Stay tuned. again thansk for the responses Craig
