Food Product Inserts and Premiums - let's have a discussion - post your favorites

Over the past 100+ years many products provide some kind of premium - whether insert or mail-in. They promote the product and thus cheap advertisement.

My focus is specifically on some of the premiums that come from food products.

I'm only scratching the surface. So, if ya have something to post? Please do!

I'm starting with a couple of Babe Ruth Scorers - compliments of Quaker:









And now a baseball card game - Batter Up - compliments of the Cott Beverage Co.





Cracker Jack inserts:









The CJ cards were sold in boxes around 1993. I don't collect original CJs - tho I do have 1 'type' copy that I got from a Rotman auction back in 1991 - had it graded by PSA - not in love with the baggie.

Bazooka Bubblegum - mail premium Pocket Knife - I mailed in 25 cents and 10 wrappers for this gem

That's about it for now.

I'm trying to get us on some different stuff to discuss. I'm sure many of you have some "food" issue stuff. I was a big fan of food issues back in the early 90s.

Great stuff as usual, Stone! I've got a lot of the send-away (mostly Kellogg's) cards, King-B (circle) cards, etc. But that's new stuff compared to what you've shared.

One thing I was given from a neighbor who was moving away was this Phil Rizzuto metal photo. I think it was a 1950s Wheaties promo? I'd appreciate any feedback on this item!

(Sorry for the poor resolution on this. I need to re-scan it...)

Very cool item.

Another great Wheaties premium from 1952!

They were "glued" to the backs of the boxes. Thus, they're usually found with some paper residue on the backs.

The set of 4 included Ralph Kiner, Stan Musial, Phil Rizzuto and Jackie Robinson.

Great stuff, Mike! I really enjoy looking at the graphics on the packaging of these cards and giveaways. It's a great way to put collecting into the cultural context of the era.

While not intended for human consumption, I've always been a fan of the '54 Red Hearts.

Some of the most saught after hockey cards are food items. Many are the only card of a player and listed on psa set registry.
I am going back into the early 1900's
An interesting fact of 1954 Red Heart...the co was still honoring send in's into the 1970's

I love your collection Mike!

The only thing I have is not really an insert but I LOVED the Post cereal baseball cards on the back of the cereal boxes. I still remember talking Mom into buying more cereal just so I could have the cards, then sitting at the kitchen table and studying the cards while munching on Alpha Bits (I think) on a Saturday morning. Then cutting them out with those dull scissors that an 8 year old gets to use.

Here's one from the Sealtest Dairy Products Corporation.



Picking up one with the mailer box allows one to pinpoint the date of the promotion - in this case to 1948. And was distributed by Reliance Molded Plastics Inc. of Providence, RI.

I believe this bowl was offered as early as the 30s and as late as the 60s?

The only way to know for sure is to do some research and see if I can find actual ads from Wheaties boxes. I remember items like this on boxes: send two (2) boxtops and 50 cents....

Thanks for all the neat posts. I am a food card fanatic, but there just aren't any more offerings out there. I got a bunch of 80-90's stuff and am always looking for something new to collect. Some offerings were: Tombstone, French's, Churches Fried Chicken, McDonalds, Kraft, Post, M & M's, Wonderbread, Pepsi, Coke, Mother's Cookies, cereal offerings, etc, etc, along with some gas station stuff: police sets, slurpee coins, and limited regionals. I am always looking. Anyone else? What am I supposed to do with all of those cereal boxes?

Kellogg's hasn't been mentioned.
I have a Kraft Macaroni and Cheese box with Steve Garvey and someone else, but I can't find it right now.

The Carnation Major League Wrestling cards came from boxes of hot cocoa mix and were inserted into boxes in thin packs with two cards in each.


There are six cards in the set that feature NWA and AWA wrestlers from 1985.


I think these have great design and photos and I really like the difficulty in finding them and especially in gradable condition.
