IF - I had that kind of doe to blow on a piece of cardboard, it certainly wouldn't be for a modern card.image

Kind of my point of the thread. I would rather invest in a Mantle or someone along those lines.

Mantle and Jeter are kind of in the same boat, though.

The Jeter has been a tremendous investment.

There is a board member who said he sold his copy for around $6,500. I am sure at the time everyone thought that was a ridiculous price.

    SMR pricing

The SMR now has it listed for $22,000 and in the liner notes you will see two prior sales listed. I would bet that card is up in the 20k range in the first few days of being listed.

Not necessarily. It depends on when it was purchased and re-sold.

Circa 2001-2003, the PSA 10 was a 15-18k card. And a BGS 9.5 sold for approximately 34k around this time.

    Circa 2007-2009, the PSA 10 was a 5k card.

The past few years, the PSA 10 has been a 25k card.

I guess like they say, timing is everything.

There is a thread where the OP is frustrated by a falling card. I have to think the buyer of the BGS 9.5 at 34k is a little frustrated too. Ouch.

Wow...that's a lot of money for a fairly common modern day card. The power of a 10 is mind boggling....

I really wish I was in a better financial position in 2008-9. There were some great buying opportunities across the board during the financial crisis. I guess that's why prices were depressed though...a lot of us were in similar situations. For me it was an upcoming wedding and two spare homes we needed to dispense with.

I know some think I know a lot more about the economics of cards than I do.
But here's my question. Say another jeter PSA 10 sp gets graded. How far of drop would you expect with this one now that there are 2 modern cards? In general.
    Thx

Forget the Jeter (for me). I have never seriously bid in these online auctions but threw in a bunch of lowballs on 1955 Topps PSA 9 cards. I gotta admit I was shocked and stoked when I realized I actually won 8 of them! One card is a POP of 4 with no 10's and I won it for $263 (plus the vig). Damn.

I don't have much to add in response but that end price is amazing to me.

Nice pickups on the 55's in 9.

Just for fun I decided to see what I would buy with the $33,800+ spent on the Jeter. For starters, all in PSA 8 ... a 55 Clemente RC at 11K, Koufax RC at 3K, 57 Ted Williams at $1400, 67 Carew RC at $800, 67 Seaver RC at $1000, just for fun, a 60 Mantle at $1400, 59 Gibson RC at $950, 62 Maris at $1750, but let's stop here. I've spent roughly $21,300 and I've still got $12,500 to throw around. I don't see how a modern card can equal the above listed cards plus the extra 12.5K I've got left over. I guess I don't have to get "it", but I don't get "it".

You could have also bought the 86 Fleer basketball set listed above this post. Which long term will do much better then the Jeter.

While I would never pay that much for a modern card I think the Jeter card should help other modern cards increase in value.
