Love the nicknames. All of my friends have them. I occasionally have to stop and think of their real names.

Too Tall Jones......Most knew his first name to be Ed but great handle just the same.

Rocket Ismail......and a rocket he was.

    Not nicknames, but.....

How many people know that Tom and Nolan are not Seaver's and Ryan's first names?

    They're their middle names.

Their first names are George and Lynn.

I knew that Ryan's first name was Lynn but not Seaver's first name.

Rocky Marciano.....actually Rocco Francis Marciano so close enough.

Babe Ruth.......Guessing that more that 20% of America today would not guess George.

One of my favorite monikers will always be Vinnie "The Microwave" Johnson. Instant heat

Also in the late 70's Michigan had a hoops star named Joel "Windex" Thompson as he could clean/wipe the glass

Might have been Ernie Harwell that mangled Mickey Stanley's name in the heat of a play in the late 1960's

He was called Stickey Manley for a while after that.

While all of these are great nicknames, only a small percentage fit the requirements that the OP mentioned. He said nicknames in which most people did not know the player's real name. So Boog Powell, Yogi Berra, Gates Brown, Sparky Lyle, Dizzy Dean, Oil Can Boyd, etc all fit. I doubt that Say Hey Kid, Iceman, Mr. October, Killer, and Moose (and many others listed here) are players that few people know the real name of the player, or if they are the kind of nicknames in which they were used more than the player's actual name. For example, Goose Gossage is one where I think a lot of people know "Rich", but at some point nobody called him that anymore, so "Goose" sort of became his first name. So, younger fans might only know him by that. I would also use Leonard "Truck" Robinson as an example of this. I remember him as Len or Leonard with the Bullets, but when he was with the Jazz and Suns (and was good), he was always just "Truck". So, newer fans at that time might not know him as Len. Just my two cents.
