PSA graded packs - Rip or store

Just curious how the members feel on this topic? I just started collecting unopened PSA graded packs over the last 6 months

I currently have
3 1972 Topps baseball, 1 PSA 8 & 2 PSA 7, do not know what series, any way to find out via the wrapper or is the only way to determine the series is see either a number or reconize a picture/player?
2 1974 Topps baseball PSA 7
2 1975 Topps mini PSA 7
2 1976 Topps baseball PSA 9 and a PSA 8.
1 1979-80 Topps Hockey - PSA 9. I'm thinking this one may be the best to hang onto and left alone, since its Wayne gretzky's rookie year.

Anyway I'm getting an urge to rip but do not want to rip all.

I'm not sure on which packs would have the best chance to increase in value, so I'm just asking all of you out there what are your thoughts?
LMK thank you Craig

I personally wouldn't rip any of them. Once they are in psa slabs, that is what protects them from me. I think most of them are worth more in the slabs, than what you are likely to get from them. I did recently rip a 75 mini pack, but it came from a group rip, where a number of people had mentioned they got well centered cards. I did pull a couple of nice cards, but if I have no idea about where the pack came from, I'm keeping the old one's sealed. Just my 2 cents.
I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.

I would rip the 7s if you are yearning for a rip, and keep the 8s. You cannot tell by the wrapper which series the 72s are from but you can sometimes determine it by looking for the player showing through the wrapper. Topps also produced mixes series (5/6 and 1/2 for example) in 72, too.

Personally I would open them however chances are the value will go down the drain on most of them unless you end up with a 9 or 10 Star Card.
Opening them is just like betting on a horse and the horse don't win you lose.

Was looking thru my 1972 packs last weekend and the later series wax packs are a little different from the early series. The players face is redder, like the OPC packs, for my 5th/6th pack obtain in a group rip. For The early series packs the middle of the face is whiter.

  • I would open the PSA 7 packs.

    I'd keep them unopened.

If you're getting the urge to tear into something, buy some cheap wax and go crazy.

I thought I spent too much time studying my packs. image

    Collecting:
Any unopened Baseball cello and rack packs and boxes from the 1970's and early 1980s.
  • I really don't want to open them but I do have the urge ... lol ... anyway I will stay put for now and maybe buy some rack packs and rip them. Any good dealers around that all of you trust? I saw that there was a unopened sale by Mark out there that offered some 75 minis to the mid 80s. How does one get in that? is it posted somewhere or do I need to continue to watch the boards until it shows up?

  • Having them graded is a great way to prevent the "MUST OPEN SOMETHING!" impulse. Buy something cheap to open, or come to my house and open box after box of junk wax. You can start with a whole case of 90/91 Topps Hockey and go from there.
    Collecting 64, 66, 67, 70 & 71 Baseball. Cubs, wax, cello & rack baseball.
  • Rip them all. Thats what they were made for
  • Ugh. That was definitely a tease.
