Anyone ever change their collecting focus?

I've been collecting mainly Michael Jordan BGS 9.5's for a while now and feel I need a breath of fresh air so to speak. I've been thinking about changing my collecting focus (temporarily) for a while. I know many people here are very strict about their focus, and so am I but I would like to expand my collection.

What do you guys think?

My two cents.... I think there is a happy medium, somewhere between 'I want one of everything ever made'/lack of focus and 'I only collect this'/highly focused. I started with the complete lack of focus and have to force myself to not have too many different things I'm actively collecting. It sounds like you're starting from the other extreme. I would recommend adding one other item to your focus group that is something completely different, but still interests you. Going from adding to a modern player collection to try to build a vintage set, for example, could be the breath of fresh air you need. Target something small, but is still attainable and available if willing to hunt.

Edited to correct my poor grammar.

I did. Best decision I ever made. I've never enjoyed my collection as much as I do now. Being focused can save you LOTS of money.

I went from high grade vintage basketball to pretty much exclusively autographed 50's-70's hockey and basketball and I've never been happier collecting. Sold off almost everything from old collection!

I am currently in the process of switching my focus. I am selling a lot of my raw 50s cards. I am getting away from just buying any and every 50s star card I find. I'm going to be a little more selective on what I buy and focus on graded cards more.
    What I Collect:

PSA HOF Baseball Postwar Rookies Set Registry- (Currently 80.51% Complete)

PSA Pro Football HOF Rookie Players Set Registry- (Currently 19.80% Complete)

PSA Basketball HOF Players Rookies Set Registry- (Currently 6.02% Complete)

There was a time that I did not collect wrestling cards and I am happy with the decision that I eventually made. The first time that I never lost focus is what I collect now.

Are there any other sports players that you really like or want to start collecting?

    I have one.

    Thanks for the input everyone!

    CREE,
There are a few different collecting directions I want to go in, but right now I really want to hop on the unopened bandwagon (big surprise right?). I've always had a fascination with unopened packs and boxes even since childhood. I remember my brother and I buying unopened basketball boxes and I would open some of my packs and keep the rest unopened and stashed away. They only stayed unopened for about a week or so, (I was so weak then) but I'm alot stronger and have more willpower now, I promise!
  • Mine has not changed focus, but rather weeded out peripheral wants in place of my main stuff I want to collect.

I started collecting everything from cards magazines with my player on the cover to store model gloves and bats, but mostly both modern and vintage cards.

When the modern card companies went from ridiculous to unbelievably insane with their 1 of 50,100, 250, 500, 1000 etc. I decided to focus on the registry and the Master set. Sold a ton of stuff to finance my purchases and grading fees and was able to become #1 in the Harmon Killebrew Master set and Topps Master set.

Having way more fun now. Anyone interested in a 50 card lot of Killebrew autographed inserts? LOL

You have a very narrow focus - way too much for my taste.

There's plenty of room for expansion IMO.

Your favorite team - like the Bulls?

Collecting hi grade cards of all the starting lineups during Jordan's tenure with the Bulls?

    Auto cards of Bulls?

Other items connected with the Bulls like SLUs?

When I got tired of cards, I turned to baseball board games e.g.

I'm also a fan of "oddball" things.

Good luck with your new quest.

I used to collect solely Ty Cobb cards for a few years. Then I went to Presidential autographs until I completed the run. Then I went to signed rookie cards for a few years. Now, back to Presidential autographs again and whatever else I think is neat.

Just collect what makes you happy at the moment, not what you think is going to make you rich, and you'll be enriched by your collection.

Tend to agree with this. My collecting now vs. my previous collecting run from 84-2000 before selling out just about everything the first time is much more enjoyable. Once I decided to get back into collecting, and got a real focus and stuck with it, I found I enjoy it so much more than what I had back in the day. Smaller, more efficient collection but a collection that I really love for more than just monetary reasons.

    Those are all great suggestions.

You could even consider collecting older Bulls players like Artis Gilmore or Bob Love. Teamcentric collecting is a good way to stay focused without being limited.

I wouldn't be a good example for you to follow if focus is the goal, as I tend to be in a variety of places (not just cards) and do enjoy occasionally rotating through them. Just settle on what works for you!

I wouldn't say change, but I've expanded. I started off laser-focused on Bo Jackson only. Bo is still my primary collection but I've added a few other players and some sets that I pursue on the side.

I collected baseball as a kid, move to basketball in my 20's. Now I just focus on football and some 1980's baseball rookies.

  • Wow! I thought I was the only one who couldn't focus! I think we should start CFA. Can't Focus Anyonumous, and yes, spell it that way! hahahaha! Anyhow, I too was all over the place. Now I am just focusing on 1967 Star Trek items as my prime. Also, a few a examples of high grade 1977 #1 Luke Skywalker cards. In my opinion, having 1977 Topps, Topps Sticker, O P Chee #1 Luke in PSA 10, is better then having the entire Star Wars set. I believe that 1967 Leaf Star Trek is one of the top 3 sets to collect, along with 1940 Superman, and 1959 Stooges. I picked the Leaf set because of limited supply, and almost impossible to get a PSA 9. And only one PSA 10 is thus far graded.
