Are these bill holders really archival safe?

Hello Fellow Coin Collectors,

I owe a lot of thanks to this board for introducing me to Provident Metals.

I am in need of some bill holders for US currency from the last few decades. I saw some

on the Provident Metals website. However, it is not stated what material this is made out of and

customer service could not say anything about it either. Anyone knowledgeable about this:

Thanks, I forgot there was a forum specifically for currency.

You need to be certain that the holders don't contain any PVC. PVC is used to soften plastic but, over time, tends to migrate to anything it touches.

Try Denley's of Boston. They have been selling high quality Mylar holders for paper money for many years.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • you can make your own holders out of mylar sheets using an inexpensive food bag heat sealer. PVC it self does not migrate it off gasses and those gasses are detrimental to whatever you are storing. When you buy a new car and that film that builds up on the inside of the windshield is a great example of this issue.

PVC contains a plasticizer to make the PVC flexible. This oily substance will be absorbed into the paper like an ink blotter thus causing the paper to be damaged.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

It has just been confirmed that they are vinyl. Stay away from those products.

Normally holders that are archival safe will be adervtised as such. It is a strong selling point.

If a coin holder or paper money holder is archivally safe they are usually advertised as "non-PVC" or "PVC free". If you don't see this assume they are PVC and are unsafe for long term storage.

And it's also not the off gassing that is damaging to coins. When that plasticizer and metal touch-- chemical reaction

In postal history circles the go to provider of archival quality holders is www.atlanticprotectivepouches.com. They are used by everyone with paper to protect up to the Smithsonian. I have had many paper items stored in them for almost 20 years and both the items and holders are unchanged. They come in a variety of sizes and can be custom ordered as well. Quantity discounts are available. Plus the owner is a nice guy to talk to on the phone!

Unfortunately, that's not enough. Some supply dealers advertise unplasticized vinyl as "non-PVC" and/or "archival". It is best to look for those that affirmatively say they are made of polyester or Mylar (one trade name for polyester).
