Thinking about picking up some late 70's-80's boxes any suggestions

Like the title says I am thinking about picking up some boxes of non sports cards. I mainly collect baseball but I have dabbled in GPK cards a bit. Honestly I have some interest in TV show and movie cards as well as Dinosaurs Attack even though I have that set. Of the top of my head I wouldn't mind finding a Mork and Mindy box as those are the first cards I remember opening as a little kid. Maybe the original Battlestar Galactica, Tron, Dune as well. I am interested in Star Wars but those look like they are getting pricey. There are others that interest me as well. Any recommendations where to buy other than EBay or BBCE? Also what some of you guys favorites, or what do you think is a bargain right now.

I've got a batch of 1982 Tron cards I'm getting ready to submit, but my Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark currently have more priority for me. I don't really know where else but eBay to go for these cards, but the prices aren't very high for the boxes I've seen of Tron or Dune. Good luck out there.

P.S. The pop report doesn't show any Tron cards graded yet.

Good luck with the Tron cards. Honestly when I started collecting again almost two years ago I had no plans of collecting sports cards yet I ventured into it anyhow. I was mainly interested in wrestling and some non sports stuff. My interests seem to be going that way again. I guess I need to work on different projects for a while so I don't burn out. I have a few boxes on my watch list I may grab if the price is right.

I like Scottsdale Sprotscards quite a bit. Some of the prices are a bit high, but some good deals pop up as well. More importantly the packs I have gotten from there have been legit. I bought a 1980 topps baseball box a year and a half ago and graded some of the packs. All passed. They were obviouly legit to me, but this way you can take Steve's word for it and not just mine.

  • BenG,

It's a few years after the 80s, but if you have any interest at all in music, I would highly recommened getting some 1991 Proset musicard boxes. They can be found super cheap still and have many of the big names in music from the time along with some stars from before that (John Lennon, etc.) There are 3 series - Series 1 and 2 in the U.S. and a U.K. version. The series 1 U.S. seems to be easily the most common and easiest to find but still has many of the stars.

Just a thought if you are looking for ideas.

I started collecting them right about the time some of them really shot up in price. I remember seeing 1979 Alien boxes all day long for $30-45 about a year ago. Now I'm seeing people hit the BIN on $75-100 for them. Seems crazy. My long-term plans are to rip the boxes I've accumulated and do a high-grade set but for now I'm enjoying them as unopened. The graphics and colors on the nonsport display much nicer than their sports counterparts, IMO. I wish I would have grabbed some Star Wars boxes back in the day, those have really gone bananas. But I've been able to pick up some loose packs (including a series 1 OPC) and that's good enough for me.

There are some obscure issues in the 80s, too. I've found one pack of 1987 Ting Uranus Strikes and was happy to be able to find that. Good luck on your search and post some pics when you get your boxes.

Yea prices seem to be going up for sure. I may grab a few things here and there to find what I like best and want to focus one. I have a few boxes on the way including the first ever OPC box I have ever bought. Hopefully I can update soon.

I opened some of those a few years ago. Not sure what I did with them honestly. I may check them out sometime. I have a 1964 Topps Beatles A Hard Days Night set. I bought and almost complete set locally last year and went ahead and finished it.

Yeah, I've picked up a handful of OPC boxes, including a Raiders of the Lost Ark. Some of them are just real hard to find.

Got a Batman Returns box in today that was pretty cheap. Nothing special but I will put in on the shelf with my other boxes or rip it sometime if I get bored.

The Stadium Club Batman cards are actually pretty nice. A seller threw a pack in for free with my order and I opened it. Was impressed with the quality.
