EAC / Colonial Help - Out of my element on a Conn. Copper

This coin was part of a lot that I purchased and is part of a series that frankly I know nothing about. Any help identifying Variety/Rarity, Condition, and Value would be much appreciated. I apologize in advance for the subpar cellphone pics.

  • You have a 1787 Miller 17-g.3. It's not a rare variety (R.3 or low R.4) but distinctive given the obverse legends and punctuation. As for grade, I would say VG though many colonial guys call this F. Surfaces don't look too bad for the type, maybe a bit rough. Retail value would probably be around $60-$75. Hope that helps!

The Whitman book on Colonials is really "attributing Conneticuts for the Complete Idiot". Even I've done it, twice. If you find one Not in that book you hit the LoTtErY. The keys to identifying are Date, bust style and direction, punctuation, letter positions relative to certain letters. They are a Fun Cheap and Easy way to try Colonials. You can learn a lot about "attributing" by cruising unattributed coppers and identifying them with your books. I'd grade your coin a bit higher, since the surfaces and appearance are "pleasing" The centering is OK but half the date us off the flan. I think Conneticuts were the most "successful" coppers or the era, circulation wise. Not too long ago they were "junk" except for a few standout varieties but now the specialists prowl and good coins are big game.
