1934/1935 Gallaher Park Drive Champions - Variations?

Sorting some pre-war golf today and ran across some variations for the Series 1 cards, with and without the names printed on the front (different size font on the back for each as well). Both versions appear appropriately aged and the same card stock, so I don't think it's an original vs. reprint issue, but could be wrong. All of the Series 2 cards I have contain the name printed on the front. Any others out there with singles/set to give an idea of if this is a legit variation and which is more rare? I haven't seen anywhere that recognizes this, but maybe it's known in one of the books out there?

  • I have had several of these sets and both the "with captions" and "without captions" cards appear to be equally produced. Both sets are original and not reprints. Hope this helps.

It's been a known variation for some time (if it's the same set I'm thinking of. Is there a Primo Carnera card in the set?), although I've never seen any kind of premium attached to either version.

Thanks for the responses. I did finally find the POP report for the 1st series (Beckett had as 1935 for both, POP has 1934 for Series 1 & 1935 for Series 2), and do see the W/CAPTION notation and without. With caption seems to be the only style for the 2nd series.

    Reggie, yes, there's a Carnera (card #40, 1st series).
