ANACS grading vs PCGS , NGC

Saw an ANACS ad in the latest NN, giving a price of 10 coins graded for $ 125, with free return ship. How are ANACS grading standards compared to PCGS , NGC ?

I would never crack a little white slab image
  • I think it depends on what your hoping to accomplish in having your coins slabbed. If your just looking to have your coins in some sort of certified holder with a fairly accurate grade assigned, then the ANACS deal makes sense as it's much cheaper than NGC or PCGS. However, if your looking to have your coins graded for the purpose of selling them now or in the near future, IMO having them graded by ANACS wouldn't be a good idea at any price point.

I've found ANACS grading to be all over the board and clearly the market agrees as their grades carry relatively little weight price-wise. I've cracked out many ANACS coins and had them upgrade at PCGS as well as coins in ANACS details graded holders that have straight graded at PCGS. Of course, there are tons of ANACS coins that wouldn't cross anywhere near the assigned grade, if at all.

Basically, if your looking to add value to your coins and have their liquidity in mind, I don't think the money you save on the fees at ANACS is worth the trouble you'll have selling the coins down the road.

the resale market considers Anacs slabs the same as raw. Go try and sell an Anacs slab for yourself.

NGC and PCGS are considered top tier with PCGS resale just slightly higher than NGC for US coins. NGC holds a premium over PCGS for World Coins but I think that gap is lessening

ANACS has the best acrylic for photography on all generations... Only the PCGS Rattlers come close.

As far as grading it's on a coin by coin basis which is the same for all third party services.

So you can find conservatively graded coins in the recent yellow slabs that will fair better at the top two.

I agree with indeedlib - pretty much spot on advice.

And from Broadstruck: So you can find conservatively graded coins in the recent yellow slabs that will fair better at the top two.

That is also true, as bourse cherrypickers like me can attest to.

ANACS can be very tough with their grading. Especially for modern coins BUT if I want a particular Variety Attributed that doesn't happen to be in the CPG, then I'll use ANACS with no hesitation at all.

ALL TPG's suffer from grade variations and to think otherwise is just foolish. As it so happens, PCGS Graded coins do much better in the market than ANACS graded coins but that is all in market perception which pleases PCGS to no end.

Just remember this thread the next time folks are being critical of the assigned grade for a particular PCGS coin and you'll understand what I am saying.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    I disagree.

    I have.

ANACS grading is stricter than NGC in my opinion.

There is currently some work going on in early copper on PCGS and NGC and with the exception of MS coins they are the same compared to EAC and the MS difference is not all that much and could even be arguable, in my opinion.

I had some low grade MS PL dollars that came in a roll, saw there 10 coin special, so submitted them to anacs at Balt instead of going to NGC. They will bring about 10-15 bucks less than NGC in those grade ranges, so its mute point. Usually I never use them, but in this case it was cost effective. Need them in some kind of PL labeled holder to ebay em

The biggest problem with ANACS IMHO is the multiplicity of several loosely related (or not) but different outfits operating behind the same name over the course of the years.

The ANACS of Cap'n Henway days was not the same as the Amos ANACS, which is different than the Blue ANACS, which morphed into the Yellow ANACS. But the early yellow ANACS is actually quite different than the current Yellow ANACS….

    you get the idea?

Not that they are a bad grading service at all, but there are some significantly different philosophies as well as obviously different grading teams operating at any given point in their timeline.

ANACS coins trade sight unseen at around 80% of the sight unseen bids for PCGS / NGC coins. Consequently I have very few ANACS coins in my inventory - probably about 3 or 4 common modern silver commem issues in MS 69. I think they really look pretty in their blue ANACS slabs. All of my classic ANACS coins were cracked and sent to PCGS, NGC, and Teletrade raw coin service. There is no doubt the market prefers PCGS / NGC coins and in many instances PCGS is preferred period.

Assuming I agree with the grade on the holder, I do not normally discount ANACS coins. I may discount an ANACS coin if I feel it is low end in the grade range. I have cracked ANACS coins which all crossed at the same grade or upgraded at other TPG's. I think a lot of people, not really knowing how to grade will buy an ANACS coin, attempt to cross it, and possibly have it downgrade.
