The Rare American Coin Baltimore show debut went well and I'm pleased with the outcome. I took in some nice coins in trade along with some table purchases and several consignments. Following are highlights from the show that might be of interest. Please check my website price lists at www.seateddimevarieties.com for more inventory. 1799 - PCGS VG 8 CAC - $1,300

New! Virginia Collection, 13 Stars, Regulair Date. A choice specimen with original gray toning throughout obverse and reverse. Surfaces are surprisingly mark free for the grade and overall quality is confirmed with CAC green sticker. Reverse has numerous diagnostic cracks in the legend. Once again, a lovely type coin from a fuss collector.

1843 - NGC AU 50 - $1,100

New! Virginia Collection, Original Gray Toning highlights this desirable 4th year seated dollar issue. Surfaces are free of contact marks and rim integrity is quite good. The thick gray patina has subtle brown highlights and evenly covers the obverse. The reverse has a more subtle tone which allows some light to showcase the clean fields. A strictly original seated dollar that will only increase in value over time.

1859 - AU 53 - $1,400

New! Virginia Collection, No Motto Specimen with deep obverse ebony/gray toning while revese is toned in lighter shades. Strike is crisp with bold features. This 1859 seated dollar is a relative scarce issue with only 256,500 struck but low survival rate. For completely accuracy, there is a toned over line on the left lower obverse from star 3 to rock. Otherwise the fields are blemish free.

1871-CC - PCGS VF 30 - $13,850

New! Virginia Collection, Choice and Original Carson City Specimen. A surviving example from very low mintage of 1,376 pieces. Offered dollar is PQ for grade with consistent original light gun metal colored toning. Please note, I've struggle to capture the consistent color of this dollar. Please reassured that the color is a uniform gun metal gray throughout obverse and reverse regardless of the image quality. Strike is bold and the fields are blemish free. I would not be dismayed if this coin was housed in PCGS VF35 holder as the overall shield details and remaining LIBERTY on scroll along with strong eagle wing feathers could easily support at least a VF35 grade. Few examples have come to market in this wonderful state of preservation per HA Archives. In past 5 years, five EFs have sold at prices ranging from $11-$21K while one VF35 brough $13K. The VF35 cannot compare to the offered specimen. This specimen is competitively priced given HA findings.

1872-S - NGC AU 53 - $4,300

New! Virginia Collection, Accurately Graded and Scarce. Another strong offering from the Virginia Collection with mintage of only 9,000 pieces. This lovely Seated dollar sports an even gun metal gray/blue patina which is partially captured in the images. Reflective fields that are blemish free. The reverse is hammer struck with high relief eagle feathers that stand out the coins surface. Obverse has typical strike with some wear on the left leg. Much scarcer than Philadelphia counterpart that seems to be omni present at auction and online sales.

** Seated Half Dollars **

1872-CC - PCGS VF 35 - $1650

New! Virginia Collection, WB-7, Original Toning. Another superior specimen from the Virginia Collection that has been off the market for years. This desirable 1872 Carson City half sports even gun metal gray toning throughout the obverse and reverse. Strike details are strong especially on the reverse eagle feathers. Field are blemish free and choice.

** Seated Quarters **

1844-O - PCGS EF45 - $350

New Baltimore! Briggs 1-A, Original and Choice for Grade. Lovely even gray patina highlights problem free surfaces on this example.

1853 Arrows & Rays - PCGS AU53 - $675

New Baltimore! Choice Original, Cracked and Clashed! For the seated quarter collector who wants more than a type coin. This example sports that important gray patina that is typical of original silver. Eye appeal is solid as you can see for images. Obverse has substantial die crack through the bottom of digits into base then rim. Reverse is obviously clashed above the eagles head. Just a wonderful specimen for the collector who desires quality coins.

1853-O - G 6 - $125

New Baltimore! Briggs 3-E, Filled O, even medium gray toning. Variety comes with highly polished obverse and reverse dies resulting in weak remaining details. Briggs comments that he had seen examples of this variety with VG grade details with luster. Definitely the most difficult variety for the 1853-O date. Assigned grade is based on remaining device details and not on actual wear.

image

1857 - PCGS AU Details Code 92 - $250

New Baltimore! Smoking Liberty Variety. Nice even gray and rose toning however the surfaces are a bit too reflective to be consider original. Die defect at shield is well defined for the variety. The few dark obverse spots are vedigris on the coins surface. Reverse is well struck with strong eagle feathers.

image

1858-O - VF 30 - $150

New Baltimore! Choice Original, Briggs 1-A. A slightly better date with even original gray toning throughout obverse and reverse. Field are fully blemish free resulting in a nice attractive quarter for a mid grade Dansco set.

1869-S - PCGS VF 25 CAC - $725

New Baltimore! Scarce Date, Choice Original, Briggs 1-A, CAC Certified. Surfaces are covered with even medium gray/brown patina and blemish free. Obvious symmetrical obverse die cracks from foot through Stars 12-13 and from date/base into Stars 1-2 then through stars above Liberty's head. Reverse die is eroded since being previously used in 1866 and 1867 for earlier coinage. Mintage is a scant 76,000 pieces.

** Seated Dimes **

1840 No Drap - VF 35 - $325

New Baltimore! F-104a, Rare Pie Shattered Obverse. Only the 4th example seen above Fine grade during many years of seated dime research and this one is quite pleasing. Obverse is even light gray with peripheral blues between rims and stars. The reverse is a medium gray, again with blues near the rim. I've assigned a VF35 grade since the pie shaped die cracks due have wear along Liberty's leg and on the shield. Not as rare as the 1839 Pie Shattered Obverse F-105b and F-105c die states but still really difficult to find for an advanced variety collection.

1853 No Arrows - F15 - $385

New Baltimore! F-101, No Arrows, Original. A date that is always in demand and difficult to locate in problem free original condition. This example is nice and original with blemish free surfaces. The patina is that nice light to medium gray that is characteristic of original silver. The reverse is full VF20 while the obverse has more wear across Liberty that VF would allow so a F 15 grade is assigned. Many times more difficult than 1844 date but priced at about the same level.

image

1860-S - PCGS EF45 - $965

New Baltimore! F-102, Original Light Gray. Always a difficult date that sells quickly when on the market. This example sports even light gray surfaces throughout obverse and reverse. Obverse strike is strong with nice head details while the reverse strike is typical with some weakness in the lower wreath leaves coupled with wear. Surfaces are blemish free with hints of remaining luster. Older blue label PCGS holder.

image

1864-S - EF 40+ - $550

New Baltimore! F-101, Wow! Choice Original Example. This dime was purchased at Baltimore show as walk up sale. Dime had been sitting in paper 2x2 envelope for years and acquired that even medium gray and rose patina. The fields are blemish free while the strike is average with some head weakness that is typical for S mint dimes. The only issue is a small contact mark on upper left arm. Though the 1864-S date may be the least difficult to locate among the Civil War years, it still ranks as a tough date in original condition. I am pleased to offer this specimen on the price list.

** Seated Half Dimes **

image

1850 - AU 55 - $235

New! Virginia Collection, Choice Original and Eye Appeal. Another wonderful seated coin from fussy Virginia collector. This half dime has strong luster under the gray patina and screams originality. The strike is good while the eye appeal is superb for such a small coin. Of all the half dimes in inventory, this example is the most balanced and attractive.
