1965 Topps set update - now getting out of control

It was a nice small group when I started. I went on a business trip for about a week, come back and the list has grown some more.

Wayne was dethroned as the #1 finest by Mastronet....I am sorry for that.

Some people have taken their set off from the listing...I am sorry for that too.

It makes me re-think how possible it REALLY will be to complete this set graded 8 or higher with the number of people listed, not to mention the people that are building this set that aren't listed.

Not sure what your issue is--There are only 4 sets above 15% complete. Take a peek at 1967 & 1968--twice as many sets with twice as many cards! Talk about not having enough mouths to feed...image

Used to working on HOF SS Baseballs--Now just '67 Sox Stickers and anything Boston related.
  • ok...I know it would never be easy. But you have to admit, when there is a limited resource, the competition heats up.

The issue is just that...With a limited number of cards that are graded at a ceratin level, it makes you second guess the feasibility of really completeting a set. If there are only 2 cards graded PSA 8 and two people on the registry already have those cards....now what. The only answer...lower your level of expectation and seach for a lower graded card.

Thats the part that is hard to deal with. When you are excited and have your mind set on completing a set at a certain level and then you are stopped in your tracks because a card just isn't availble the way you want it.

It's all about striving for the original goal.

ZACH - You need 500 to complete the set, I need 300. There are so many cards offered on eBay that we can pick and choose, then add dealer inventory and then raw cards, I see no problems getting the cards. I personally do not even look at the pop's - if I need it and its in line of what I will pay, thats good enough for me. Wayne, on the other hand who needs about a dozen cards no longer has this luxury. Plus don't forget the set registry is still a recent idea. Prior to a year or so, very few submitted mid 60's and upwards commons. Now due to the popularity and the registry grading specials, I see a bountiful supply in the future. So take your time, and have some fun - just don't outbid me image ...jay

Zach, I agree with Jay. There are so many cards that you still need that you can be very patient and just pick up the good buys. The 65's are not selling any higher than they did a year ago and that is probably because there are more than twice as many cards graded psa 8 as there were a year ago. My understanding from dealers is that there are still a lot of raw cards out there to be graded. I've picked up over 50% of the set just since last November. There aren't that many cards that just don't come up for sale. But when they do - that's when it gets ugly. Good luck with the set - it's coming along nicely.

Actually, its the opposite in my opinion. With so many set collectors, others will be looking/searching for cards to submit. A people with high quality raw will be more compelled to submit.

And the 1965s on ebay are much more in line with the SMR than some other sets. PSA 8 1972 commons are going for triple digits. Luckily we haven't see that inflation in 65s yet, as most PSA 9 commons don't go for triple digits.

  • zach,
i have to jump behind the prevailing sentiment here. my primary set is the 1970 baseball and it to has many collectors with few cards in high grades. there are over 100 cards with a pop of 3 or less !!! image this is even AFTER the 70's promotion. i feel your frustration but i also know there has to be tons of raw cards out there. for me this now becomes more of a hunt for raw cards. good luck to you.

Hi Guys, I am a 1972 Topps collector and a member of what most are calling "THE FAB FIVE". I am currently in fourth place and a week from going over 86% complete. I am writing to you guys because I am very interested in the 1965 Topps set. Is there any advice that anyone can
give me if I decide to take the plunge? Neil image

    Neil-

As someone who is already 86% complete in another set...I would say you have the "basics" downimage. Advice on 65's...do not worry about POP's (and the bidding wars) as they are rising at a nice pace. There are about 4 guys out there that are real close to 100% completion..so let them fight it out. Also, PSA 9's are red hot and a seller's market.

Also...if you wish to start on the 1965's please email me...as I would like to speak with you privately regarding your start-up.
