ESPN is currently working on a 30/30 of the legendary wrestling family the Von Erichs...

Von Erich news

This is really exciting news! I have watched a number of these on Netflix and especially enjoyed the one on Bo Jackson. The Von Erich families story is one filled with tragedy and it over shadowed how famous and successful they were.

There are tons of stories of women literally climbing on Kerry Von Erich's car as he left nightclubs and literally fainting at the Von Erich's presence. In the early 80's as wrestling gained tremendous popularity the wrestlers began to truly become celebrities and with this came wild parties and massive amounts of drugs.

Kevin and Kerry in particular were tremendous athletes and once they began using large amounts of steroids their bodies transformed into unbelievably built physiques. Many wrestlers have said Kevin was one of the toughest wrestlers in the ring and many had little interest in working with him because of how real he wanted the matches to look and what a beating you would take.

When I first started my quest to try and get all of the cards in the best condition I could I quickly realized the 1982 Wrestling All Stars Series B Kerry Von Erich was going to be really tough in high grade. The photo used is from 1979 and pictures a very young Kerry.

Kevin on the other hand was first featured in the 1985 Wrestling All Stars magazine set and this is a card that could certainly gain some popularity once slabbed.

It will be interesting to see if this show adds interest to their collectibles like other shows from the series have.

Here are scans of each of their first cards.

1982 Wrestling All Stars Series B #7 Kerry Von Erich PSA 9. This card is a pop 2 and one of my best self submitted cards.

1985 Wrestling All Stars #22 Kevin Von Erich. So far none of these have been graded but I am sure a few will in the not to distant future.

Kerry was a BEAST. Can't wait for this one. I wish they would have been in the WWF at that time.

I can't wait. I enjoyed the Bo Jackson one as well and they are always well produced.

Here is a 1971 Japanese Gong Fritz Von Erich bromide card. I love how it has the claw on the front of the card and didn't realize how famous the Iron Claw move was until I read a little more about him.

Anyone ever read the book "Master of the Iron Claw"?

Late 1960s to early 1970s. I think about 3 years.

WCCW was my favorite wrestling to watch when I was a kid. Kerry Von Erich was and is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. The feud they had with the Freebirds was epic back then. I will be looking forward to watching this when it comes out. I have the WWE DVD set and I need to pick up the other documentary that's out there.

I think this set is all non-Japanese wrestlers. 8 cards per month over about three years. I'll dig up the ones I have and start a checklist.

Here are a few more cards of the Von Erichs.

This one has better centering then the first one I posted. There is a little surface issues at the bottom of the card that I believe is an ink smear from the card in front of it. This seems to be an issue with some of these cards.

Mike Von Erich was one of the brothers that wanted so badly to be a wrestler but really didn't have it. He incurred a shoulder injury and developed toxic shock syndrome and was never the same. He took his life in 1987.

    image

The Kerry Von Erich card is located on the top row and like all cards from that row suffers in many cases from not having a border on top. So far this is the best one I have found but as you can see it really has very little.

    image

I have this card at PSA now and features Kerry in his gimmick The Texas Tornado from his short run in the WWF. Shortly after his run in the WWF he took his life in early 1993.

    image

This card was graded earlier this year and sits in a PSA 9 holder. He is featured on a few other cards from the set as well.

There are eight cards in this set that feature Von Erichs.

Mike didn't really want to be a wrestler. He was pushed into the business and then rushed back after the Toxic Shock. It was Chris who really wanted it but didn't have the body for it.

I was under the impression he wanted the fame and to be like his brothers as well. The wiki says that some important names said he never wanted to wrestle as he was not a natural athlete.

    Mike Von Erich

Wow I didn't realize Chris shot himself at 21.

The death and disaster that hit that family is just crazy:

    - a young son electrocuted to death at age 6
    - David dying of a drug overdose
    - Kerry committing suicide
    - Mike committing suicide
    - Chris committing suicide

Only Kevin is still alive among the kids.

I have been looking for updates on the ESPN special. Nothing yet.

On a side note today would have been Kerry Von Erich's 54th birthday.

To make this thread a little better we need to add Lacey

Kerry was a major stud with the chicks so you have to assume his wife was pretty hot to create her!

I just read on their Facebook page that the special will be airing very soon. As soon as they post the date I will update the thread.

If anyone sees this card and is interested do not buy it. The card is missing at least a quarter of an inch. Someone hacked a good chunk of this card off.

This thread reminded me to dig up one of the Japanese Magazine inserts of the brothers. This one is from Sept 1983.

    Cool inserts!

    Card Serial Number: 0007592416

Set Name : 1982 Wrestling All Stars Series B
Player Name : Kerry Von Erich
    Date Graded : Tuesday, March 26, 2013
    Centering Grade : 9.0
    Corner Grade : 9.5
    Edges Grade : 10.0
    Surfaces Grade : 9.0
    Autograph Grade : 0.0
    Final Grade : 9.0

Check out the bottom corners on this example. Not sure how this was given the sub grade Gem Mint for corners. This card in general has tough top to bottom centering so that was easily fixable. Just chop off the top of the card. Haha

It doesn't sound like this is a 30/30 but a short 16 minute film. Either way it is coming out this week.

I never thought I would see the day that a PSA 10 Kerry Von Erich would hit. I got a text yesterday from a fellow collector who had his PSA 9 reviewed at the National and it bumped to a 10.

The centering on the card is by far the best I have ever seen. It is amazing how much lower border the card has. A really sweet PSA 10 Pop 1.

A truly awesome card that features a superstar and an extremely condition sensitive card.

To give you an idea of how few cards have graded high there are only 12 PSA 8's(shows 13 but one was a crack and resub of mine) 1 PSA 8.5, 2 PSA 9's and now a 10. I own 7 of the PSA 8's, the 8.5 and both 9's so there are very few of these floating around in other collections.

I can't imagine he will be selling it but if so that card will go for four figures is my bet.

I would think that Kerry Von Erich PSA 10 would easily be a top 10 card in the 108 card set of wrestling all stars from 1982/3.

For certain in my opinion. One of the eight cards I profiled in the SMR article was a Kerry Von Erich PSA 9.

In 1985 I bought a few packs of the Topps cards but they were the same price as the baseball so it was an easy decision to stick with the packs that had Dwight Gooden potentially in them. Fast forward to July of 2009 and I started buying Brock Lesnar cards and then remembered that Hulk Hogan had a card that came out when we were kids. I found a listing for the 1982 Wrestling All Stars and purchased them and the rest is history. I had never seen the cards and only two were advertised for 82A and three for 82B. Once I opened the box and flipped through the sets I was instantly hooked.

I honestly never thought this card would surface. When PSA interviewed me years ago I was asked to highlight some of the best cards and I naturally chose the Kerry Von Erich. In the article I stated I didn't think a PSA 10 would ever surface and I was wrong.

Growing up in Orlando without cable television in the early 80's the only wrestling content we got to see was Championship Wrestling From Florida and by 1985 the WWF had made it on network television. My parents bought me a paperback copy of a wrestling book and it had this incredibly muscular wrestling on the cover holding the NWA Heavyweight Title belt. I had no clue who it was and finally put two and two together a few years later when my neighbor let me watch wrestling in his room on ESPN. It was none other then Kerry Von Erich. I followed his career from that point forward until his unfortunate death at 33.

This was the only centered copy I really had ever seen.

    image

Since I started collecting the cards in 2009 there was really no other high grade copy I wanted more and remember going all out on the first PSA 9. I self subbed the second and then the PSA 8.5. My heart sank when I got the text from the collector who owned this card and was sending it in to PSA because it was without question the best copy I had ever seen and I wanted it.

Unexpectedly the doorbell rang this morning and the two cards I just won Thursday night were being delivered. I am so excited to add this card to my collection.

Here are other magazine clippings that feature the photo used for this great card.

That is a very cool item. It's up to $1,950 right now. I caught WWE Smackdown this past Friday on Fox. Very entertaining show, especially at the end when Brock Lesnar destroyed Kofi Kingston in all of two seconds for the title. I was then shocked to see Cain Velasquez show up. Very entertaining. I will definately be tuning in to see what happens next. Wrestling is addictive.

The current bid with the buyers premium is $2,340.

I was really looking forward to actually watching the show on Friday night but in the morning my wife said we were going to watch the Orlando Balet private rehearsal and so we ended up going out for sushi and hanging out at home after and so I didn't get to see any of the show. I woke up the next day and saw the Brock highlights and loved it! A squash is perfect. As if Kofi stands a chance in real life. Booking wrestling this way is cool in my book.

I have it on now and hopeful something cool will happen.

On a different note I just saw an AEW commercial run so very interesting to see they are buying adds on WWE's main program.

I can't wait to see what happens next with Cain Velasquez. I remember when they fought in UFC. I always thought Brock could have beaten Cain in UFC. I watched that fight yesterday on youtube. I'm looking forward to Friday. Tyson Fury also got involved in a incident with Braun Strowman, so that should be interesting. Tyson is supposed to have some microphone time on Smackdown to respond to Strowman. Good stuff!
