Newman Seated Halves

Everyone keeps talking about the moon money that was spent on some coins, but amongst the seated halves the results were largely mixed.
The 66-S No motto went strong but many others didn't. 1839 No drapery in MS64+, 1850 in MS65....lots of others went pretty low. The1851-O in MS66+ with a CAC sticker went for less than what I would have thought as did the 72-S MS66 CAC.
Didn't cross reference what GG has in the collection, but perhaps there is not much demand past the first tier?

Perhaps.... I certainly do that with Eliasberg. Unfortunately, what will be lost over time was the variances of quality within the graded holders.

Yes, it is very interesting, and somewhat refreshing, to view the results and see the variances in prices. Similar coins of the same holder grade brought significantly different prices in many cases based on quality/eye appeal of the particular coin.
Many tend to get so caught up in holder grade that it was nice to see that individual coins stood on their own merits, as they should. All MS-65 Bust Dimes and Half Dimes, for example, are not the same and shouldn't be "commoditized."

It was obvious that seated halves were not the focus of Mr. Newman. Many of the coins didn't have great eye appeal either.
Never said that anything went for a bargain, but I don't think there was irrational exuberance that showed up in other portions of the sale. Are seated halves "soft" relatively in the market?

<< <i>Perhaps the problem is that Seated Halves have become so expensive to complete as a date/mm set that demand has dropped. >>
Maybe, but I think that the quality of the coins (which could only be assessed in hand) was the primary factor.
