Price is too good to be true. The lettering on the slab just doesn't look right to me.

That could just be the lighting. The pic on CL is awful. Notice the spacing between P & C. It's way off.

Also, the coin seems to have rotated a bit in the slab. Is this known to happen? I can't imagine someone tossing the slab around, considering how expensive it is.

Notice the haze in the left obverse stars and a little in the right obverse stars also appear in the craigslist ad.

    It's 100% real IMO. >>

I 100% feel sorry for whomever buys that coin…That coin has more luster than an AU58…FAKE FAKE FAKE IMO.

    .
this line of counterfeit coin has that dusty aka hazy look as someone else mentioned. the letter spacing is key as well. heard a lot of commentary from others that the insert has a "purple-ish" tint to it which i do concur with but is not the primary feature i use but it is reliable thus far to use.

Fake and obviously not the same coin sold by Heritage.
    When in doubt, don't.

Yeah! First thing I noticed. Start at the right side and compare.
    Scam, run away.
  • vprvpr Posts: 622 ✭✭✭
Also notice that in the barcode after the first two thick lines on the left, there are 3 skinny lines together in the fake vs only 2 in the real one. His initial ad mentioned that he would prefer to meet at a coin shop, so the authenticity of the coin can be verified.

FWIW…I just used my iPhone to run the search scan from the CoinFacts app and it immediately scanned the HA coin and did NOT scan the fake…Pretty cool that it can scan from a computer screen image

Look at the bar code under the last digit (5) in the certification number. Clearly different slabs, IMO.
  • donzmedonzme Posts: 170 ✭✭✭
On the suspect slab, the bar code lines are too tall, and the coin is too lustrous to be a 50.
  • Yep just used a barcode scanner they are different. This is a complete fake. Thanks Bob for helping me see these better.

    Should I send this?:

Your dollar and slab are fakes. The gig is up friend. I'll wait till tomorrow morning before calling the police.
You can explain to them how it is real. I'll send them a photo of the real coin in a real PCGS slab. Let's see you talk your way out
of that. $3500? Is that still a misdemeanor in Chicago?

    Craigslist coin/holder absolutely counterfeit.
I've pointed out an easy tell on these before. The stacking tabs on the Craigslist coin holder are sharply squared. A genuine PCGS capsule has these stacking tabs radiused.

Chicago PD has better things to worry about. I learnt my lesson when i was dealing with that scammer who ripped me off on here for $800. I will give them a call tomorrow and see if they can do anything about it, although I doubt it.

In any other city I would agree...but in Chicago, I wouldn't be surprised if the police department got their cut from these coins when they sell. So I think they would be extremely interested in who owes them their vig. Hands down, one of the utmost corrupt city's in our country for sure. Please don't ask me how I know this; because I'm not telling image

Edited to add: Miami is a close 2nd

someone can call the locals and refer them to this thread?

Both listings in question have been deleted, supposedly by the author. If he's such a no-fear badazz then why would he delete them?

I don't think he fears us, but he might fear the SS or the long arm of the law.

I contacted him as a clueless buyer. Asked if he'd meet at a coin shop. He responded saying that it sold. And now, I got another email from him with Bob's post from this thread. He is either a member or a guest here. He had the gall to email me Bob's post like I did something wrong by posting the ad here. Shameless crooks.

  • He seems to love sending the colorful emails. Here's mine and his response:

Hi. Not sure if you know and I hope you don't, but your 1889CC Morgan is a complete fake. If you do sell it and get caught, it is a felony with a 10 year minimum mandatory sentence in federal prison. Just thought you should know and if you would like, I will point out the evidence of it being fake.

how about u keep ur evidence 2 urself i dont believe u its real and u best believe its gunna be of the streets of ur city along with dozens more coins that are also, all real. can u just imagine 1 day sitting at home, not having an escalade(u know they are redesigning the escalade for 2015 now i gotta trade my f***in 2013 in), not having high dollar prostitutes, not having the best drugs money can buy, not having the ps4 b4 the official release date, not having influence. then imagine when u say F**K being broke. then u wake up and look at the s**t in this picture and know uve made it.

ill be super high...i sent this from the IP address 212.83.151.26

He sent me the pic of the "money" too.
I think I can actually smell the meth lab on this email!

The streets are super mean in Chicago...you can bet this goon will be on the wrong side of a pistol one day soon...it's pretty much inevitable. Since this thread was started, there have probably been close to 20 murders committed in Chi-town. Let's hope that he stops responding to your emails and he makes the Darwin awards list and is murder victim #21 image

By the way...the whole changing IP address thing isn't a big deal. He's using a random IP scrambler called Tor...It's open source and used for private browsing, etc. Any nimrod can use it.
What he doesn't know is that he can still be traced. image

It isn't necessarily that, but if you google "proxy" you can download thousands of them, which change your IP.

And are easily traceable, I should mention.

Any dimwit could use a proxy, obvious this guy isn't the smartest.
