Better to buy 52' Mantle in SGC holder vs. PSA? >>>

There is a great looking 52 Topps Mantle on eBay being wold by who else, Probstein. Very interested in getting it tor $26,000, am thinking about going with SGC here rather than my normal PSA due to the whole card security thing, I just don't want to buy a fake!!!!!

I feel you can't go wrong with either grader. Check the sides out of the cases of both of them. I have seen fake cards in SGC cases as well, but they didn't start out that way. The scammers have gotten pretty good with making up cases and flips.

PSA is safe you just have to know what to look for. If there is frost on the edges or the seller has 0 history with high $ cards them stay away. If you do buy then after receiving the card run a finger nail along the edges, if it's glued back together it will separate with ease. I have found while cracking and submitting cards the easiest holder to open is SGC with PSA being a close second. Beckett slabs have to be destroyed and the funny thing is PRO has no credibility but try opening one of there slabs it is impossible without a saw.
  • I think if I make a run for it I may hand walk it into PSA to have them look at it and see if it would grade at least a PSA 6. I like SGC for the older cards. This situation with fake cards and slabs is becoming very worrisome to me.....
  • I kind of wish that PSA had BGS style holders actually. There are almost un wreckable, however don't like them with my older cards, just use them for newer autographed cards......
  • For an old issue like a 52, you can never go wrong with SGC. And the card will look better in a SGC holder.

Did I miss something? What situation are you talking about?

  • The issue with the slabs have come up before.

I have cracked literally 100's of slabs from PSA, SGC and BGS for cards for my sets.

The SGC slabs will sometimes crack easily, but usually not without obvious evidence.

The PSA slab on the other hand is without qusetion the easiest to pop open without the signs of evidence and much easier for counterfitters.

BGS is by far the most superior slab and your not going to crack them without obvious damage. To bad the quality of their vintage card grading
is not on the same level as SGC and PSA.

To resubmit, add to a raw set, or to have it autographed are some of the reasons to crack. Some people prefer raw as well, but like the confidence of buying a graded card, especially when purchasing online.

That is my #1 reason to do the crackout. I don't crack out more expensivecards ($100+) but I do it often for $25-$100 cards
that I want for my raw collection.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the PSA 10 collector he didn't exist.

If it's being sold by Probstein, I think your in safe hands no matter what what holder it comes in. I don't think he'd want to put his name and reputation in jeopardy with something that he felt was questionable. Especially with such a high end card.

All the nice Mantle's you've posted before about needing advice on buying, why would you want to settle for a card that looks like that. If you'll be content with owning an OC card in a SGC holder which will be difficult for you to sell then go for it. If you think you're buying the card on the cheap because it can be flipped into a PSA 6 holder for a nice profit then you'll have better luck asking Santa for one.
  • Also to the OP, i would consider purchasing a 52 mantle in a BVG holder.
