Buyer payment issue!! Help!!

bsshog40bsshog40 Posts: 3,946 ✭✭✭✭✭

So I sold a KindleFire on ebay. I don't have any problems working with people but this email I received from the buyer seems a little strange. I thought that if you paid with Paypal, that whatever you was paying by (credit card, bank acct., etc...), had to be registered with Paypal? Does the message I received below seem legit?? Thanks for any help.

Dear bsshog40,

Hello, I wanted to touch base with you on the kindle fire. I really want it, but I ran into a problem. My husband left for NIE and won't be back until next Friday or Saturday and he for some odd reason felt the need to take our debit card with him and I have no way to get ahold of him for the numbers and it's not the on file with my PayPal account! I would really appreciate it if you would be patient with me and I will pay for the item ASAP! I apologize for any inconvenience this may have you.

Sounds a bit hokey but it sounds like she definitely wants it and might just need until next Saturday to pay you?

Edited to add: Where is this NIE place that husbands go and can't be reached... Narnia? image

Well it's up to you. You can hold on till her hubby get's back or tell them i'm sorry item needs to be paid in full by what ever time you wish and if not i need to repost it Sorry and thank you. But what ever you do dont take any other card...... Like my grand mom gave me her card to used or so on. image

    Hoard the keys.
  • Looks like a very suspect story...but, could be a clueless person as well...your callimage

    I would move on...

    since:

Husband took the ONLY DEBIT card.
They don't own a credit card...
Financial source (or at least most of them) with paypal should be ON FILE!
    All the best,

    Rob

offer the option of sending you a USPS money order priority mail (or wire transfer to your bank) and you will ship the day the MO arrives. image

She sounds legit. Check her buyer feedback sounds like she's new to the game. Maybe she doesn't get paid until Friday and was too embarrassed to tell you she's broke.

I wouldn't sweat it, you've still got the merchandise. If she does end up using paypal make sure it says OK to ship on the PP details page. Sometimes transfer of buyer money takes a few days and occasionally doesn't make it, usually insufficient funds from the funding source.

Correct. You also can pay with funds already in your paypal account (from selling items). Paypal does require the CC or Bank account to confirm the person registering the paypal account.

Maybe the card on file with PayPal is expired and she needs to add a new one?

Would be no problem for her to pay. Just seems she does not want to use the method she set up with
    Paypal.
Now, besides me, who in this day and age are off the grid for a week? No cell coverage? Hmmmmmm,
hunting in the woods. Off with his mistress?

    Maybe he's in Costa Rica.
  • The PayPal account would be linked to the account that the debit card is registered to in order to work so that part is BS. Just say link your checking account that the debit card is on and that will take care of it, It will only take you 5 minutes and once you have paid it will be on its way. Otherwise ebay will open an unpaid item case (not a lie as they can if you have that feature turned on).

That will get a response that will most likely be true.

It might even be that the buyer doesn't have a Paypal account set up.
It lets buyers use it without an account but they need a card number.
If they do it that way you might have the "not verified address" thing show up on the payment. (used to be that way)

See the link, supposedly you can turn off the option that allows people to pay you that don't have an account:

I tend to believe people. There's not much to lose by waiting a few days. Relisting it is your only other option, and would be no faster at this point.

Agree. I would wait a week and see what happens. In the grand scheme of things this is definitely not a big deal and you certainly shouldn't stress over it.

  • I'd wait for sure. Sometimes the money can get a little funny. And if the deal falls through, no real harm done.
Let's try not to get upset.

I would say wait until next weekend. From experience, mine exactly, I can say stuff happens at Paypal. I offered to purchase a large dollar coin from a boardmember and had recently changed my checking account. I did not read the e-mail that said I had to wait until a deposit was made in my account and I had to confirm the deposit with Paypal. Well....I had to explain that to the boardmember and felt like an idiot. It took an extra 2 days, but he was patient and I bought the coin.

Her story sounds plausible to me and I would give her the benefit of the doubt.
