There was so much floor traffic on Thursday I needed a flashing red light or safety orange spray paint on my roller briefcase to avoid collectors tripping in the isles. It was insane as dealer/member Pistareen had collectors a full two rows deep which looked like a bunch of crazed NYSE traders all trying to get his undivided attention at once... He never had a chance to mount a lamp on his table until around 1PM.

Is that like being in Hawaii in the late sixties?

<< <i>Sounds like hyperbole. I'd like to see the hard numbers and statistics. >>

The "secret buyer" was in attendance. Those ARE the hard numbers and statistics.

That reminded me of something from my youth that I had forgotten until today. One of my local shops back in the early 1970's was very difficult to buy from and always had prices well above any price guide. Whenever we passed on anything from them she would say that her "buyer" would take it if we didn't. It became a running joke between us that there was always a "Mr. Buyer" out there to scarf up stuff we didn't buy. And on the really good stuff where we were too late to buy something neat, invariably it was "Mr. Buyer" (ie coin vacuum cleaner) who beat us to it. Those were fun times with Mr. Buyer even if we never met him. We were constantly reminded of his existence though.

You hit the nail on the head. I used to visit a similar shop in the mid eighties. Everything was priced at least 50% above sheet and even more because of its "superior quality" and the owner's "keen eye for grading." Funny though, I saw no one buying any of it but their sales hype was about their "special investment customer" who bought tons of it when he came in "so you better hurry and buy it now." at their way above price guide prices of course. They would even advise you not to go to a coin show "sir you would be lost, its mainly just for dealers and industry people." Try to sell a gold coin to them "we can only offer x $ as this is just a jewelry piece." Some poor guy tried to sell them some clad proof sets: "sir we can only give face less a 10% coin removal fee for bank deposit - these are junk and not worth anything."

While I appreciate the drive to seem to make the coin market seem better than it is....Baltimore was way off from the last few years. I am not by myself saying this! Broadstruck...which Isle were you tripping over yourself on? image While we did enough to make the show successful...it does not compare to any of the shows I have attended in more than 10 years prior. image

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Doesn't to role require at least some affable charisma? Although I am sure the kind to camera good looks are there image
