1948 Bowman Football

Have opportunity to buy complete raw set in pristine condition. Noticed that common cards graded PSA 8 on ebay are "buy it now" for around $200. Not much seems to be selling. Choice cards like Sammy Baugh or Charlie Trippi are $1500 or thereabouts. SMR lists the entire set in PSA 8 at $25,000. I'm wondering if the experts on this forum consider these prices inflated. What ARE sellable prices for high-end material? I'd be grateful for any responses. Thanks.

I looked up a few cards in VCP for you.

The Baugh card sold for $570 in PSA 7 and $1300+ in PSA 8 from this year.
The Luckman sold for 200+ in PSA 7 and about $600 in PSA 8

A small sampling of commons sold anywhere from $100 to $170 in PSA 8.

Thanks lightningboy. That was very concise and useful info. I'll probably go through the long (and $) process of getting them graded in 4 or 5 separate batches and hope for more cards above 8 than below.
  • I just ran the set on VCP all in PSA 8 and all the cards have recorded sales except #15 Gil Bouley
and based off the last price sold your total comes up to 26,368.86

BobbyVCP, Thanks for your research. A selling price is one thing, but real buyers are quite another.

And a description of raw 1948 Bowman cards in pristine condition is one thing, but receiving PSA 8's is quite another.

So true, Maurice. Another thing that concerns me is that current listings for PSA 8s are 'buy it now' for $200+ and nothing is selling. There IS one for $89 which hasn't yet attracted a bid. In fact, I haven't seen ANY bids for the cards I've been monitoring, though I admit I've only been watching for a short time. Nevertheless, I'm beginning to suspect the market for this set may be soft, even for 8s. Maybe an auction format with realistic opening bids is a better way to go.
To be honest, I haven't even seen the set yet, let alone purchased it. My initial excitement of its availability caused me to post this thread. I'm meeting with the owner next week, taking my loupe and micrometer. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Going to see the owner tomorrow at 2:00 pm Eastern time. He keeps the set in a safety deposit box and the banks are closed on Veterans Day.

Good luck! If there isn't a rush, please take to take some pictures of the general condition and post them for more reliable estimates.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Heh, Heh. The good news is that it IS a complete set. What's disheartening is the overall condition averages around 3.5. The skeptical responders to this thread were correct. The optimistic dreamers of a "find" provided high excitement. Thanks to both.

The problem was the owner had loaded the cards into a commemorative booklet issued the same year, and had glued the full-color cards into their designated places. The loading wrecked most of the corners and I suspect they weren't exactly pristine to begin with. Everything happened when he was a kid back in '48. The booklet was the coolest part of what I saw yesterday.

Rightfully disappointed, he plans to give everything to his son-in-law, even though I offered to sell it for him on ebay.
