It's not a big time card or anything but I was sniped on a 97-98 ultra gold medallion Michael jordan BGS 9.5 card. I lost it by a dollar in the last few seconds so I was pretty mad. I think there are around ten 9.5's in the pop report so it could be a while before I get one. had to settle for a BGS 9.
Not on eBay but I once passed on two 1957 PSA 10 commons being offered at a card show for $200 each. This was about 10 years ago. Also didn't buy the 1952 Topps nickel packs Mark Murphy was selling for $2500 each or two for $4000 plus all the mint commons he was selling at the 1996 National. Too many to list all of them.
About 3 years ago, a 1966 Topps Bobby Orr RC graded BVG 9 MINT came up on eBay. The seller had fairly low feedback, so I topped my bid out at $5000 (which would have been a steal) and was outbid by $5. After about a week, the winning bidder posted positive feedback on a successful transaction. I have been kicking myself ever since for letting that monster of a card get away. Haven't seen one surface ever since (aside from the $250k BVG 10 listed right now).
Not a big one now, but it was to me as a kid. Back in 1990 there was a show at my local high school, I was 9 years old. There was a dealer that was selling team sets of 1989 UD baseball. I knew I wanted one, because the cards were so cool, I considered the Mariner set for $4 or the Phillies for $2 (since my baseball team that year was the Phillies). I decided to get the Phillies. As the Griffey rc started picking up steam and flying upward in price, I always regretted not buying that Mariner's team set.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.
Card show in 1987. Seller wanted $100 apiece for two 1970 Topps Cloth Stickers. I offered $150 for the two of them. He said no, and I didn't buy either.
I'm an idiot.
Edited to add: On the flip side, I traded around 150 1969 Topps Basketball EX-MT cards for a 1989 Upper Deck Factory set. See above.
oh my. the plurality of disappointments would make it impossible to choose just one. so i'll fondly recall the beautiful B&W photo which i partnered on so many years ago featuring Babe, Lou & Christy Walsh along with their perfectly bold sigs below.
i got to hold it and examine it briefly after the purchase was made. i gave some thought to how cool it would be to own such an amazing artifact. but i was only in for half and my partner was already on the phone to the auction company.
the photo sold for over 7 times what we paid for it. fair enough, a tidy profit.
i'll leave it to all of our imaginations what it could be worth well over 20 years after the fact. whoever owns it now is a winner, for sure.
It was on ebay in 2003 or 2004. I was the underbidder at just over $16K. Now, a PSA 2 Plank goes for easily double that. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll ever come close to being able to afford a Plank again
