I will start off saying these were really fun to view in hand last week.
In looking at how the sale is progressing so far-
Of the 38 coins
1 has met the reserve

Stay tuned..
may the fonz be with you...always...

Some of the coins are exceptional, but man some of the reserves are out of sight

For example the 1880 Shield 5c. Nice coin and only two at that level, but a friend of mine had one he sold a couple of years ago that was a 4OGH upgraded to a 65, and honestly was almost just as nice for about 125k less.

Jdimmick: "Almost just as nice" is why there are grades of ms65 vs ms66, etc. If I am not mistaken, an undergrade MS65 example of the 1880 nickel sold at a recent Stacks sale for strong money (you can look up the exact price). This MS66 is a superior specimen and a wonderful example of this 19th century business strike rarity in my opinion; a true no question business strike for that matter. Since these 38 coins are coming up for auction this week, I will limit my comment only to the 1880 singled out in this discussion. And, I agree with the OP ... these collections are masterpieces and a pleasure to view in their entirety. Wondercoin.

    Mitch,

I agree, lots of times that 1 point makes a tremendous difference. And, I have seen JHF coins prior like his SLQ's he consigned last year(or earlier this year) to Stacks balt. Just exceptional coins, you could clearly see the difference between his coins, and what you normally see in 65-66 higher holders. I wish him well, I was just a little surprised at some of the reserves.

I mention this collection in my preview of the SBG Rarities Night tonight.

There is a terrific 1863 QE in this same event.
