Your opinion on qualifiers?

I've been collecting long enough to learn to look at the card and not the grade, but is a 9Q generally valued more than an 8.5? I've got an 8.5 1974 Topps Pete Maravich #10 that looks perfect to me, but I'm wondering where on the pop report scale it would land. It might sound goofy, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who compares their cards with the others. lol

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
<< <i>These cards are generally avoided like a virus right? >>
Not really. I like them. It allows you to get a nicer card for less money. I imagine others feel the same way.
I think it is safe to assume that in most cases an 8.5 will sell for more then a PSA 9OC.
it kind of depends on the issue and how bad the centering might be. A 70/30 PSA 9 o/c card will many times
out sell a centered PSA 7 card with corner wear.
<< <i>I'm not a fan of qualifiers at all, I would rather PSA just downgrade the card to the appropriate grade. I don't need them to tell me the card is way off center I'm sure none of us do. These cards are generally avoided like a virus right? >>
I disagree with the card being downgraded at all. Mint is Mint. let the eye of the collectors make the call on weather the centering is acceptable to their personal tolerance.

I sort of agree with you on that. But centering cant be right for Mint or at least Gem Mint.
But I like qualifiers , they help identify a card that is not perfectly produced. I think there is a big difference in the process of the card being produced causing a qualifier and a card being beaten up. I would much prefer a card that was oc than a card with hacked corners. Matter of fact some cards are so beautiful even with qualifiers that any collector should be honored to own them. So for a fan boy you should for sure buy a qualifier over a lower grade card.
If you are talking speculation investing then go with perfect cards. You at least do not have to worry if the market will change in aspect to the condition. Bad enough people buying hot stars of today insert cards will mostly be worth 10 percent of the value in a couple of years.

I fully agree,I say out with qualifiers and go the SCG way.

A psa 9oc is the same as a PSA 7.
I am a fan of qualifiers. It helps point out flaws in a card. A oc card may be mint but its production quality was not there.
Often a oc card gets less than its counterpart 2 grades lower. However as Cardbender has pointed out depending on the year or
specific details about the issue it may get more. Some issues are notoriously off centered all the time. 1957 Topps and 1961 fleer basketball
are good examples where centering is always an issue. In this case a 9oc may easily outprice a psa 7.
It has been pointed out many times on these boards...buy the card not the case. If a card has an oc but in your
opinion its borderline...then it may bring more.
When you sub a card to PSA you can ask that you get no qualifiers. Then they will just give you the lower grade.
What absolutely kills me about qualifiers is sellers passing them off as regular grades. Such as 8oc..only 3 higher (higher than a 6 or 8????)
or SMR is $200 ....when a 6 gets $40
That is just preying on the inexperienced.
