Grote's 1973 cello rip inspired me to bust some '73! Well actually I bought them this week anyway to rip them! Will be ripping later in the day and posting the results.

Though they look so nice in their wrappers; hate to see them ripped.
<< <i>Good luck, Chris! Here's to hoping you pull a mint Ryan or Munson!

Stone is right! I might rip the 7 but keep the 8, as that is a $250 pack in that grade.

That was the toughest slab I ever had to open! Where was my Dremel when I needed it?
As luck would have it, I did crack the 7 first. 8 still intact!
That back is inscrutable! Can't see a thing.

I actually need a 73 Topps pack in a PSA holder for my pack run. My current 73 pack is in a GAI holder.
Before you bust the 8, any chance you'd like to trade my GAI one for your PSA one and then you could rip that one??
I'm at work right now procrastinating finishing a couple of items, and I don't remember what my GAI one graded but I should be home in an hour if you are interested.
THANKS!

<< <i>That's the way I look at it Tim. Unfortunately the gods are punishing me for pulling that Rose. This was the best card from this pack.
Buford looks good, though, and is a $200+ card in PSA 9!

<< <i>looks like the back of the card is showing so very hard to tell. Only way to tell is see if you can make out a word or two and go thru the backs of the 2nd series cards and compare. Yes I have done this before for other years LOL. Order will be reverse of normal due to this >>
I've done this as well. My 1964 Topps Nickel pack has the Giant Gunners card with the reverse showing through the seal. I don't own the card outside this pack, so I had to go on eBay to find a few auctions that had the back of the card scanned and used that along with the 4-5 words I could make out through the wrapper in order to positively identify it. I sent the evidence along with the pack when I subbed it and Steve/PSA did note the card on the holder label.
<< <i>I hope it's no ding because when I say it's the best card from the pack it means it is the only card suitable for visual consumption!
Looks much better in that scan. A 9 on that one, and you have even more house money to play with! Good luck!

The only way it gets better is if my wife wins our neighborhood chili contest this afternoon, and I can convince her that the best way to allocate the prize money is with the purchase of some unopened vintage baseball product!!!!

Tim, unfortunately it is all gone. To top it off, she didn't win, so no cash. Her buffalo chicken chilli finished second to someone who put brisket in theirs.

<< <i>Tim - the Fairly was in both 2nd series packs I opened. I put the cards away but from the top of my head, steve Barber and Steve Kline were also in both packs - don't know what series they are. >>
Barber is also 1st series while Kiline is 2nd series. Sounds like the pack was a 1st/2nd combo series pack.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I am surprised that 1st/2nd series would be mixed in the same sequence. I know that 1970 5th/6th/7th do not share sequence.
<< <i>1st/ 2nd series is actually a dream combo. I just managed to avoid all the good cards!
I am surprised that 1st/2nd series would be mixed in the same sequence. I know that 1970 5th/6th/7th do not share sequence. >>
IIRC the cards should not be mixed--in a 1st/2nd series wax pack (which I have seen before and opened in this issue) the cards should be split--one half of the pack should consist of 1st series cards while the other half is 2nd series cards. I know Duncan (packcollector) also opened a bunch too at one point a few years ago...the three cards you scanned look like possible Mint 9 material, particularly the Kelly and Belanger. How are the surfaces?

<< <i>I would think the packs are legit since Fairly, Belanger, Kelly, Kline and Barber were in both. That would be uncanny otherwise. >>
I would agree--I'm just curious if the cards were actually "mixed" or not--did you write down the sequence when you opened each pack? I'm almost certain that the couple of 1st/2nd series packs I've opened in the past were not mixed but divided into two parts within the pack.

<< <i>The actual sequence is lost forever I am afraid. But if they were not mixed then there is a bit of the same 1st and 2nd series sequences in each pack - if that makes sense. >>
That does make sense in that if it's the same head card appearing in each pack, the same cards will follow in succession, since the number of cards are few enough so that the sequence will remain true throughout.
