British Virgin Islands 1985 $20 proof coins

Apparently there were sets of 24 coins consisting of .5677 .925 silver. These were made by the Franklin mint. Does anyone have an idea how many were minted? I suspect many of these sets have been melted-

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Also, many were probably turned in at the Central Bank at $20 a pop.

Those things languished at 12 USD each for many years…
Don't have Krause at the moment; I suspect 20-30k + at least.

I can't help except to say I doubt it was a large mintage. I've always wanted to pick one up
cheap but have found only a few stragglers.

5,000 maybe? It couldn't be much higher but could be lower.

I was thinking somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000

I would be surprised if half the original population still exists

I could be on the low end. A lot of what one sees is determined by coincidence and noticing it when it is seen.

Since I'm not familiar with the box, I'd have had to open it.

Attrition on this sort of thing is highly variable and can range from as low as ~20% (total) to as high as 70%. Gold is more likely to be returned when it's profitable than is silver.

No listings in Krause either individually or as a set…. I think a bunch of these were broken out and have seen a lot of mishandled specimens of this type as well. As much as I like NCLT Caribbean coins, I have left them alone - for no great reason though.
