Does the Liberty Nickel series have a pulse??

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,262 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just curious how they have been doing as a series over the last year or two(up or down)? Any big difference between the MS and Proof coins in the market place?

I find the series attractive in proof and wouldn't mind starting a set once I finish my current set. Idk more people don't collect it.

I'd gladly own a Proof as a type piece and the supply huge and "average" demand slow. That being said, I think Liberty Nickels will someday "bloom" as a circulated series to collect. Who knows how many circulated SLQ, silver Washingtons, average half dollars have been melted. There is something quite beautiful in both a circ cam VF and even a PO 01 tells us a story. The portrait is flat and unspired so dosent look drop dead beautiful in any grade.

This series has potential. It always will.

Perhaps the title of the thread should be changed to "Does the Liberty Nickel series have a pulse?" image

In general the series has been softer during the past couple of years in both proof and mint state coins. In the long term I feel there is decent potential for nice quality graded coins. I don't think it's a bad idea to selectively start or add in this series. Selectivity is the key though as there are a lot of coins in holders which I wouldn't be a fan of. I probably look at 50-60 graded coins that I pass on for each I buy, if I can get to a price that makes sense.

Probably more of a pulse than Shield nickels, but that isn't saying much. They really aren't a very attractive coin.

I really like them. I had about half of the set at one point but let them go to focus on other things. I will return to them at some point but to answer your question, I don't think they have much of a pulse.

I think they are a classic American series and attractive as circs, uncs, and Proofs.
Certainly more interesting and attractive than just about anything minted after say 1948.

Do they have a pulse? Sure, there are some aficionados around. Supply no doubt exceeds demand for most
of them, but again, this can be said for a great many coins. Collect what you like, regardless if the madding crowd
    is chasing it.

  • Interesting that one of the most famous US coins belongs to a series that's a dud.
  • I would say the pulse is threaded at best right now. Picked up a nice 1884 proof specimen at the local monthly coin show this morning at a reasonable price to add to my slowly expanding type set. Hopefully it will turn out well since this is my first foray into classic proofs.

I've always been a big fan of Liberty Nickels.
With the exception of two or three dates, it's a relatively affordable series.
In grades below FINE, they are not too attractive and desirable, but try putting together a nicely matched set of VF or XF, problem-free original coins. Not as easy as one might think.

Many dates in mint state are a real bargain in my opinion. In both MS and Proof grades, eye-appeal can be a problem, but that only adds to the fun and excitement when finding the perfect coin.

If I had a Liberty nickel for every article I've read in coin publications over the years saying that, if demand for the series ever increases, then prices will go through the roof, I'd have... well, a handful of Liberty nickels. image

I have to believe all the old cu/ ni coins will get more attention if moderns get hot. "V-nickels" are
the sweet spot of availability and collectibility in the old nickels though, obviously, buffalos will always
    be very popular as well.

They're a lot stronger than they were in 1995.

In the XF-AU grade, Lib Nicks are very popular. I seek them out, especially the semi-keys. They sell quickly, both on eBay and at shows.

I collected an MS set of these about 15-20 years ago. I still have it and enjoy owning these coins. There are a number of R-5 and R-6 coins in MS that are not that expensive except for the big three. I'm guessing that not that many people collect them. I also started a PF65 set a couple of years ago. Prices have gone down during that time; however, finding non-ugly toning is a challenge. The rarity rating on the proof is similar to the business strikes in that they don't seem to be that much more expensive than R-1 and R-2 coins - just harder to find. I think the only reason the 1885 and 1886 proofs are higher than the rest is because so many people use them in their business strike sets so they are more in demand. People might not like these but cameo proofs are gorgeous to some - and hard to find without ugly toning.

To me the issue is to collect them if you like them because prices are down. Do not collect them if you do not like them regardless of their upside potential.

I have a collection in AU ( now certified ) that once belonged to my
Grand Father. The set was missing a few dates, mostly the Keys, and
over the last 20 years, I have finished the date run, bought a few MS
    & PR examples.

Personally, I love the design, and I wish I had a complete set of Proofs.
How hot is the set these days, I really couldn't tell you - just a few friends
are actually collecting them as a complete series.

I think the OP knows of whom I speak.
