Mech errors

I get what I feel is a relatively large quantity of mech errors in my orders that I have to return for correction, considering how careful I would hope PSA employees should be about preventing them. If these make it through QA/QC so frequently, how often is it, if possible, that similar to the label's mech errors, we receive a mis-keyed grade that is actually a mech error rather than a grader having been too harsh? I've had enough 5's that I'm convinced should be 8's that I do wonder sometimes.

I think that's an apples vs. oranges comparison. The mechanical errors occur because the grader searches the database and selects a similar but wrong set title (if that's the kind you mean). I agree it should not be so common, because it should be easily avoidable provided the submitter accurately describes the set name.

Oh, I don't mean wrong set title, like Topps vs. OPC or something like that in this case, those are also mech errors. Not only do I get errors on set titles or years of issue, but I also get them where someone has mistyped a last name. The order I'm boxing up now includes some where there is a letter missing in the middle of the name, a letter added to the middle of the name, and just an incorrect letter at the front of it. These are very clearly keystroke errors, as the incorrect spellings do not exist anywhere within the population report except for on these new errors. Also, I've got an error in specification of variety, such as with black back instead of blank back. I hear what you're saying about grabbing the wrong item from an automated pull-down menu for an incorrect set title, but name typos are a different ballgame.

To illustrate what I mean, I'll give 3 examples using the same name (this is not the specific name that has the errors on my labels, but I picked it just to post here rather than use my own cards):

Mech error #1: Clemente incorrectly spelled as Clemnte
Mech error #2: Clemente incorrectly spelled as Clemmente
Mech error #3: Clemente incorrectly spelled as Glemente

This is the kind of thing that makes me worry about whether there is similarly a potential for mistyping grades on the labels.

Strange...I wouldn't have thought there would be any typing in of names, just selecting the set and player from the database. It seems kind of a waste of time to be keying in names over and over again, not to mention that it would obviously lead to many errors.

And when yours is the first one graded of a particular card, as is the case with some of mine, it makes it almost impossible for others to find it within the population report when a name is spelled wrong.

  • I just recieved my last submission of 55 cards. 4 cards were mislabelled with wrong years not the right subset... Also had 5 come back as 5's like u said and to me they look great! Got a 9 and 10 of similar cards and really look no different I don't understand and I just hate how they don't give you any reason. I also had one case All cracked straight from them. I was very mad. They are not cheap to have cards graded and for as big of a name as they Are I was just very disappointed to see so many problems. I know they will fix them but they shouldnt have that many issues I feel like. I thought I was the only one. I guess not.

I've had 3 mech errors in my last few subs and that's excluding parallel sets which I submitted with the correct info but because they were not already in the database they just select the regular base card etc... Not worth the hassle fixing imo, took 2 months getting them back on a 20 day sub as it was.

I sent in 2 subs recently total of over 180 cards. 37 of them came back labelled wrong. From names spelled wrong to a hockey players name being put on two different wrestling cards, it was quite the mess.

Re the incorrect spelling of names. If you look at the pop report for the player's name you got spelled wrong, it's likely spelled wrong in the pop report as well. So once the first card is spelled wrong, that card will continue to be labelled wrong until someone sends their card back or let's PSA know. I've found countless errors just browsing the POP reports and let them know each time I find one. Not always do they respond and or correct. Another error that's happened to me is the completely incorrect set being put on the flip. The player's name is correct as is the number so it obviously happens when the player has the same number card in more than one set.

Yup, mech errors are not uncommon, as we all can see. But the big question is, what is the potential that a surprisingly low grade is actually a typographical error and does not represent the grade assigned by the grader but is instead the subsequent employee's mistake when making up the label?

Anything can happen but I really don't think it's as prevalent as you're alluding to. ...but if the grade don't fit you must resubmit!

I'm with you, I don't mean to sound like I'm alluding to there being a prevalent problem, just was wondering more about what the potential is, if any, that there could be any typographical error in grading. I really don't know how the labeling process works, but I like to convince myself that there is some sort of system in place to ensure that the grades assigned by the grader are the same ones that are on the slab even if the rest of the info might have errors, due to the two portions being added to the label under separate circumstances. If I didn't trust that well enough, I wouldn't be sending in subs like I do.

I've cracked out some cards before in search of higher grades and done alright with it, though on the few 5's I'm thinking should be 8's that I mentioned earlier on this thread, it wouldn't be worth the cost to crack and resub if they only raised one grade, so I'll skip them for now. They'd already have been sent back if these ones were higher dollar items though.

I got the 37 cards back today and 21 of them are still wrong. I originally sent these cards in in May on the 45 day monthly special. At this rate it will be 10 months before I get them done correctly.
