Anyone know what a King Farouk original auction catalogue is worth?

I may have a shot at buying one, but at the moment, I do not have any specifics.

I suspect there may have been several auctions. Or, as I know they grouped in several coins per lot, maybe it was all in one tidy auction. For example, I know that the 1913 V Nickel was part of a group lot with dozens of other Nickels.

Thanks for your help.

Found this one from an ebay sale:

I think they did a reprint in 1975 and think this one may be a copy.

I saw another that sold in and around $1,500 but again can't vouch for the figures.

I found one on a UK website a few years ago. It cost me somewhat over $150 plus shipping for a fairly beat-up example (torn paper covers). I then had it rebound with some faux leather covers for $60.00 or so.

Yes, there were several Farouk auctions: Only 1 for coins but others for his other jewelry, art works, etc.

Suggest you keep searching the internet, another will eventually show up. Or you can borrow a copy from the ANA library.

  • There were several catalogs issued, covering different types of collectibles, but there was only one catalog for the coins and medals. It was a huge catalog for its time, covering many days of auction sessions. Most lots contained many coins, often including all dates and mint marks (over a span of several years) for a particular denomination.

I estimate that a nice, Fine copy of the original catalog would bring $100-200. Reprints were issued later, so make sure it is an original. Annotated, sales room copies of the catalog go much higher (into thousands of dollars).

Expect ca. $200 for an original in at least fine condition. There is a similar-looking reprint as already pointed out---this will bring at least $125 retail if in fine+. Reprints lack ribs on the spine.

Years ago I had Walter Breens copy with his notes in it. Sold it to an advanced collector from Egypt. If my memory is working correctly, I believe the selling price was somewhere around $1,500.

FWIW, the photos are so blurry and the catalog so poorly prepared that I find it almost worthless, unless annotated with the buyers' names.
