What reading advice would you give for novice collectors?

If you were to give advice to a novice collector about books to read before they buy coins, which would you recommend? Let's assume they have an interest in US coins but haven't narrowed their focus to a particular series or type or even modern or classic. What would your list of 4-5 books include?

Try to get to an ANA grading seminar. They have them at some shows, or go to the Summer Seminar.
