2011 5oz. GETTYSBURG Error ??

Hi Thanks for any help on this 2011 5oz. Silver GETTYSBURG .
There is a good size groove under the letters from the E PL to the U in E PLURIBUS UNUM .
Is this a error ?? Would it be worth more or less then one without the groove ?

either strike though (foreign material between the die and planchet during the strike) or damage caused by the mint. Sometimes bring a small premium if strike through. It will however detract from any professional grading.

Also, try editing your post and removing the [URL=http://s254.photobucket.com/user/tradecoin/media/P1130906_edited_zps338342c9.jpg.html] or better yet copy the IMG link only from photobucket and using it in your post.

Possibly a planchet issue before strike, but it's hard to tell from the pic

Looks like a post-strike scratch. Had it been a strike through, I would expect to find a continuation of the line down inside the letters it crosses.

Are the letters incuse? Don't have one of those pucks, yet.

Appears to be a die scratch to me (if the letters are raised).

I would not pay extra for it, but others may.

Maybe what was struck through wasn't that thick.

Small errors need a visually appealing cool factor to bring a premium. I don't see this bringing a premium.

Then Tom is spot on with his assessment.

The piece has PMS. (Post Minting Scratch)

Disclosure: I have not seen one of these coins.

That being said judging from the photo provided I find it hard to believe the letters are incuse. Notice the bottom of the letters have a highlight and the top have a shadow, how would this be possible on an incuse?

Coinzip: light is at the north facing south.

Find a clad quarter of the same type, they are also incuse.

    Ahh.

My brain was not functioning when I wrote that.

A struck through piece of matter would have been mashed down into the incuse letters. Therefore it is what it looks like: scratch.

    Brain more on today.
