Glad I stopped opening packs

I stopped opening packs around early 2003 and haven't looked back. I just went autographs , certified, authenticated, and through the mail . I look at the 3,000 and 5,000 card boxes from 1989 through 2003 and what a waste. Packs are as bad as scratchoffs .

  • I hear ya. What a waste.

I spent $300.00 on a group rip here once.

    Out of a 1975 mini pack I got a PSA 10 pop 1 that sold for $1,250.00 through probstein123.

But seriously, ripping and submitting is a crap shoot. image

Which mini was it? If I didn't win it, I was probably the under-bidder! image You can buy me a beer at the next Nationals!
75 Minis - GET IN MY BELLY!
  • I just ran out of self-control and ripped a '74 pack and 2 '75 minis. And got nothing!! But it was fun anyway.

Can't help myself. Just went to BBCE and bought one of those 1972 5th/6th series packs and a few of those graded 1973 packs and will rip when I get them. Will post results!

I rip everything, but have honestly been displaying some self control. I bought BBCE out of their 1976 10 cent packs (17 packs) last week and won't be touching them.

Justin - I believe those 1976 packs have 5 cards. I bought a few of them from BBCE at the National. Pulled a PSA 9 Piniella and one pack had Ryan as the wax card. Too bad, it was nicely centered. I dinged it trying to rub some wax off. Sigh.

The 10c 1976 packs should contain 7 cards.

Did the 25c 1976 cellos contain 18 cards? Am I remembering that right?

That is correct. 18 cards was the cello card count from 1975 through 1977.

It was a John Montefusco Rookie Pitchers card. It was a POP 1 at the time.

What is the POP on it now ?

Good to know what you pulled from them.

I'm actually trying to complete a 10cent box for my own holding and display. Getting close!

Question re 1976 baseball wax packs.

I have some and they seem to have varying thickness. Some appear to have less cards than others, but without opening them I cannont be certain.

Did they issue excactly 7 cards in every 1976 topps baseball wax pack or were there some different packs with different amount of cards in them? Can you tell by the wrapper?

No, there were 10-cent 7 card packs and 15-cent 10 card packs. No difference in the wrappers, only the display box.
  • I wasted probably close to $30,000 .

Are talking about modern or vintage? If you were busing vintage packs back then and still have those cards, you'd almost certainly be way ahead when you factor in the prices you'd have been paying for packs back then.

After not opening a pack of cards in 20 years I bought a box of the 2013 Topps first series and had a great time ripping that. Bought a second box and with the two I had the first half of the series. I was dissapointed at how the relics worked since I got a Strasburg relic only to find out "game used" essentially means nothing for most cards. Still enjoyed building that set since I hadn't built one in a very long time.

Loved ripping the Turkey Red set this year as well. I'll do that one every year I think.

At the National I bought a box of the Bowman Premiere, mostly for the Topps promo, (which I was too late to use), ripped that and hated it.

I'm done opening the modern stuff. Seems like ripping modern stuff is all based on hitting one great insert, which obviously doesn't happen 99% of the time. Topps also releases a new set like every 3-4 weeks. Who can keep up with that? At 75-100 a box, I 'd rather go to BBCE and order something that I'll enjoy. Ripping 80's stuff to me is a lot of fun because I remember all those cards and when you see a rookie or a Nolan Ryan pop up it's still pretty exciting.

Monetary value of the cardboard is not the sole consideration for many pack-rippers.
