My Kid's First Rip: Mini's for a Mini

So I've spent the last 9 months or so acquiring a variety of unopened wax, mostly from 74-87, to add to the vault and hold until my son is old enough to enjoy ripping it with me.

Last night, I decided it was time for his first rip. He's 4, and since I was born in 1971, and the minis were available roughly when I was his age, I figured that's where we'd start. Plus, I've been itching to open another pack for awhile now.

I had 9 loose packs, all from Steve, and I laid them out for him to choose one. I explained that each one is like a gift, nicely wrapped, with presents inside. And every now and then I get to open one as a treat, and tonite I'm sharing my treat. Now he was excited.

We commenced with the rip, and I knew right away we'd opened a pack from the last group rip. Plagued with O/C and diamond cuts. I also explained that like comic books, we need to be very careful and keep them protected.

We did get a Rollie Fingers, but it was one of the more brutally cut cards. Still, he seemed to enjoy it, and since it was a rough pack, I let him put them in the penny sleeves.

When he later asked if we could do it again tomorrow, I couldn't have been happier. I asked baseball or football and he said football, so I'm thinking 89 Topps, as long as he brushes after dinner.

As a father of a 4 year old, this is so cool!! I understand the pride you had in that moment. I too have been exposing him to the hobby. He now knows the difference between a top loader and a soft sleeve. Congratulations on one of those monumental moments in life!!!

I have a 6 year old son and a 4 year old daughter. They love having "card shows" in the living room where they set out a bunch of cards on a table and pretend to be dealers. I come up to their tables looking for certain cards. Great fun! They even have a toy cash register to use.

Epic. We have a register too. He'd love that. Thanks for the idea, and thanks for sharing.

Good stuff. You've got some cojones letting a 4 year-old handle your 1975 packs. I first would have given him some 1988 Donruss packs as a test run. image
  • MINIS!!!! Thanks for sharing - the Morton is very hard to find in a 9...the bottom 5s' centering are actually pretty decent for wax. If you acquired the other packs together you might end up with some VERY nice cards image The Fingers is very hard to find in a full-sized centered 9. Most of them of O/C t/b.
You can tell your son that there are only 5 of the Goodson's that are PSA 9 (centered) and that card would be VERY valuable and uncle Henry would pay a ton image

What a cute little guy! We need to get these kids started in the hobby early! Glad you can enjoy this with your son.

Edit to add sorry about the OC minis. I grabbed some packs from Steve at the National. Everything was OC with the exception of a checklist image
  • Any chance your name is Mike?

That is so great. I have an 11 year old who enjoys the hobby and ripping packs with me. I have him write down all the good guys of any particular year before he opens the pack so he knows if he scored...we did a box of 1982 topps baseball this past weekend and got some real beauties...I keep them raw as sending in for 9's for that particular year is not worth it. I never seem to get 10's. Anyway, we are doing a 1985 topps football box this weekend...he loves it. Think he started around 4 or 5 as well with the Pokémon...surprised at how that stuff is worth so much as well. Thanks for sharing this great story with us. Love the pics as well.

As a 9 year old, this set was such an upgrade to the boring 74 set.
