Yall scared me when I read the title, I just bought the pcgs 63 from the last sale, and hadn't recieved it yet, should be here tomorrow. Had Heritage hold up shipment till I got back in town from visiting my son down in Fl.
I would think the hard part is making the coin. Easy part is a simple injection mold to mass produce the holders and the labels can be done on any printer. PCGS might need to adopt some measures like our good old GOV has on our currency and put safeguards into place for authentication.
Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

They have been...for some years now. New holders, online cert with photos of the coin, etc.
I am very tired of all the fake coins in holders out there. For us people that are just getting serious about collecting or selling it makes it very hard because we do not always see that something is fake.
I agree the bar code does not match the photo on the PCGS Cert page.
ebay fake on left, Heritage genuine on right Just compare the bar or gap under the period in 4807.63 to see the difference. It is a "fat bar" on this fake, and a "gap" on the Heritage.
I believe the PCGS Cert photos make it easy to pretend you have the coin, either by using that photo in an ad, or by using it to create a reproduction of the label.
For security, there should be a unique "private ID" the public cert photo **does not show**. The private ID should only be available to people with a PCGS member login, and when a PCGS member looks at that private ID info, their account number is logged.
I feel better about rarely buying slabbed coins. I just love the gamble of buying raw and submitting directly from my hands to our host. Yes, some come back as cleaned or a grade lower than desired, but I truly know that my plastic is REAL along with the coin in it
Great job OP. I would like to maybe get together with others, select a series and dedicate an hour or so per day combing Ebay for fakes. Create our own counterfeit detection task force and make it difficult for the fraudsters. I'm doing 5-10 fake Morgans everyday and at least 2 or 3 in fake holders per week. Others have said it's just the norm, fakes have been around since money was first struck and I'm taking it to serious.

stick around, you'll eventually be able to spot the fake holders eventually.
Here's the response to what's the history of this dime:
Dear greatbasincoins,
I received it from my older son. He had purchased it from a local private party.. He'd had it a while before I got it...not sure how long. Now my other son is headed to college and I need the money. We took it to a local coin dealer to get their opinion on it. Real deal. I know that PCGS is reputable too and that the slab was not altered.

PS: I've changed by Ebay ID from bobandlinda1 to greatbasincoins (for those that might be confused).
Registry: CC lowballs (boblindstrom), bobinvegas1989@yahoo.com
here are the responses from them to me: I don't know about that. We bought it local and had it checked at a local coin dealer who seid it was real. Do you want to withdraw your bid? I appreciate the comments. I hope that discussions are not using the PCGS item number in the discription for verification. As I stated, the discription area wording is from Ebay stock discriptions. The detail area that we posted has the real information about it. if this is fake, then i was fooled and will pull it. I am not sure how I can verify that though. The dealer assured me that it was real. change of story wounder why that is?
<< <i>Well, in all fairness, she does need this money for her son's college fund. I wonder if he's studying to be a numismatist? >>
I bet she had no kid needing college fund money.
It's a pretty small group of young numismatists/collectors that buy MS63 1895-0 dimes. It's an even smaller group that do this and have their local coin dealers confirm the fake as real.
What I wanna know is if u buy one of these large dollar fake coins in fake pcgs plastic and try to get made whole from pcgs what happens? Anyone think that at some point collectors may start a court case or something to sue pcgs?
<< <i>Wouldn't it be really bad if the eBay holder turned out to be the real one? >>
It's not. The ebay one is bad. I used the zbar bar code scanner for the iphone on both the ebay and the heritage flips, and only the heritage one came back with the correct cert #.

It might be possible that the seller thinks it is the same coin, however I suspect not due to the blurry photos.

<< <i>Yes,, it's a fake. HA sold the real on back in March 2009. Barcode is not correct for starters.
bob
Interesting to note that the auction refers to the 2009 PCGS price guide value for this coin.
But this is really scary for the uninitiated. Someone can "prove" to them that it is "real" via the certification lookup.

<< <i>This is not good. PCGS - we need an all hologram holder >>
they already fake the holo stickers, although those new holo strips in the new $100s would be good -- a technological hurdle not yet conquered.

response:
Dear greatbasincoins,
We put it in a bar code reader and the numbers match...meaning the barcode versus the typed code...no difference

I don't see any solution except what the feds do - constantly change the design so as to stay a step ahead of the bad guys.
I do hope our hosts are investing a lot into R&D.

She said that this was the dealer that also did the bar code reading and said it was correct.
Hmmmmmmmm,
Maybe she listen to some of us?
