Looks like post mint damage to the inside bottom of the 8 to me ,,,,,,,,,

a gouge to the bottom of the 8 that moved metal.

I have seen similar damage within the date on other bust halves. Very little doubt IMHO. This represent post mint damage.

Look at the "thickness" of the design on the 8 left of the incident. Then look at the "thickness" of the design to the right.
Now notice the "thickness" where you see the damage and you will note that the design has been moved by PMD at the incident.

I had been leaning toward some sort of small object stuck to the die, or something unusual happened to the die.
