YOUR MOST EXCITING TOP 5 (or 10)...

keyman64keyman64 Posts: 15,521 ✭✭✭✭✭
things to happen in US COIN numismatics since the year 2000. Could be a sale/auction, could be a die variety discovery, could be a book or published research, could be a purchase for your collection...you get the idea. No wrong answers here folks. I really think this could be an awesome thread to read over the different responses. Since I have not put a ton of thought into my top 10, I see an edit coming to this post pretty quickly. Here are a few examples.

1. 2003 Re-discovery of the 5th 1913 V Nickel (Walton) and subsequently reunited with the other four examples at the ANA for the first time since the 1940s.
2. Auction of the King Farouk 1933 Double Eagle...and the mystery part...did the US Gov't essentially buy it for half price?...or is it in private hands?
3. 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar/Quarter Dollar Mules
4.
5.
6. Signing up for this forum in May 2010
7. Meeting a few very cool forum members at shows to begin great friendships
8.
9. The discovery of the 1936 (3 over 2) Mercury Dime and my obtaining the Top Pop in PCGS MS67FB.
10. Seeing a coin sell for 8 FIGURES was pretty cool although the donation of that coin to my personal collection would push it up to my number one spot. image

I have a feeling I will be doing some serious editing soon. image

Yes, the boring things in numismatic thread inspired this thread and hopefully this thread will have a longer life span than that thread. I fear negativity will win out though. Please prove me wrong! image

Notice I did not say anything about it being a Possible Overdate of 1929 but called it what I believe to be the minimum of what it is. Yippppeeeeee, by feeding that one item into my top 10 I got a response to the thread....maybe that should make the list by itself?

I'll keep my top 5 personal:

    1. Making and selling the first and only PCGS 1968-S PR70 DCAM Roosevelt Dime.
    2. My father passing away in August 2009 that reinterested me into numismatics.
    3. Finding a 1952 Superbird quarter in the 1952 proof set I examined at my first coin show ever.
    4. Finding a cameo 1950 Franklin half in a raw proof set that subsequently graded PR 64 CAM.
    5. Completing my raw Jefferson nickel set began over 25 years ago from roll searching after 105,000+ coins (including the 1950-D).

There are probably a few others that could go into a top-10...but off the top of my head I'm pretty comfortable with this top-5.

Very interesting idea for a thread. I am going to go with "important" events because I think a couple on my list are quite negative. Here are a few of what I think are important events:

    1) The auction of the 1933 double eagle and the trial concerning the other "newly found" 1933 double eagles.
    2) Publication of exciting new research, such as RWB's books.
    3) On the negative side, the proliferation of mint offerings.
    4) Also on the negative side, the proliferation of increasingly "good" counterfeit coins and slabs.
    5) I am going to sneak back to 1999, but the statehood quarter program might have planted the seed for a wave of collectors re-entering the hobby as they reach middle age.

My memory is not that great....but here goes:

    1) 2001 joined these boards and entered my Mercury Dime set into the Registry. Started meeting forum member at show that I had chatted with on-line. Like Tony (fcloud) Mike (MFH) and Greg (keyman64) to name a few.

    2) 2004 saw my Mercury Dime set reach #1 and got the award that year.

    3) 2006 started going to the FUN show. Go every year now and is the highlight of the year for me. I get to see Mike and Greg and see the biggest show of the year.

    4) Found the elusive 1946-S san serif on ebay and it graded 64FB!image

    5) Found the very rare 1954 DDR on ebay. While only grading XF40 it was the only one known until a MS62 was made.

    6) Talked BJ into building the Complete Dime Complete Varieties Set that am currently working on.

    7) Talking with Mike (variety guy) at Pcgs and getting some new varieties added.

That's about all I can do for now. image

    1. 2004 - Started collecting again after many years away from the hobby.
    2. 2006 - Found the Coin Rarities Online website.
    3. 2007 - Changed my collecting focus to coins that circulated in early America.

As an Indian Head lover when the only 2 MS68 coins were auctioned off from the Gorrell Heritage FUN sale in 2003.
Both went back on the market by Heritage in 2009. An 1861 PCGS MS68 and 1899 PCGS MS68RD, both ex Epstein.

But it was even more exciting when the only 1909 S PCGS 67RD finally appeared in the Heritage 2006 FUN sale Link.
That was a bit of a mystery coin that finally appeared in a major auction. (Though some thought it showed signs of a
spot being removed in fields in front of lips.)

    1) Joining the PCGS Platinum Membership - Joining in the Message Boards - submitting all my raw coins for grading - then Registering my coins.

    2) Contacting fellow members and making friends in my fields of interest. Co-Sponsoring the Original Barber Coin "Monster" Thread and following it to its terminal state and restarting it as the Barber Mega Thread - Part II. I terminated my involvement in that Thread eight
weeks ago. The Thread flourishes without my involvement and I am pleased it is still the "Go-To" Barber Thread on the Boards.

    3) The membership of these forums, I have met so many very fine individuals here and numerous friendships have developed and endured
    these past 12 years.

    4) a highlight has been being invited to co-teach a course in The History Of Charles E. Barber at the ANA in Colorado Springs
for these past two Summers. I have had the privilege of being able to also take a couple of Grading US Coin courses - Intermediate
and Advanced. While out in Colorado, I was able to meet and converse with numerous "who's who in Numismatics".

    5) Joining other coin sites promoting Barber Coinage. One site - The NGC Message Boards - has my Thread on Barbers with no less
than 155,000 hits on it. Granted, most of the posts are mine - but certainly not all. I see more and more involvement from the YN's
    coming over from this site.

    6) being of assistance to a friend who I met while I was working on my 1st Barber Half Set - Glenn Holsonbake - and our friendship
that has continued to grow. He has invited me to work at his table at shows - and as I am as enthusiastic as I am, my love for the
series is infectious - and I hope to be an asset to his business.

    7) The friends I have met over the years - the memories I cherish - the practical jokes the (old) Barber membership played on me,
all in good fun. My Barber Trek Thru the South into New England stopping to see everyone for a few hours - or a day - until I reached
my goal, my cottage on Cape Cod. There are too many to name and I wouldn't want to miss anyone. So please forgive me if I don't
    name names.

    8) highlights in my collection, first and foremost, is the ability to own at the same time, three 1892-O Micro O Half Dollars, two AU 55's
and the pride and joy of Peter Shireman's collection - his old PCGS MS 63 ( which now resides in the Chugum Collection ). I am not as well
known for my Flying Eagle and IHC collections in AU58- MS & PR - with all die varieties and dozens of error coins. But it was a work of passion
and due to the fact I live in the sub tropics, I was deathly afraid of copper oxidation - and I decided to work on my Barbers instead.

    9) Starting and finishing three sets of Standing Liberty Quarters - but each and every time, one date is non existent - the 27-S in MS.
My sets have had four different over dates and they are an XF 45, an AU 53, an AU 55 and an AU 58. All of which I owned at the same
time. My current set is not ever going to be in competition with the High End sets - but - it's nothing to sneeze at either . Yes, I am still
looking for another 1927-S in MS - with a decent strike and a partial, head. My last set had a mediocre MS 64, I'm in no rush to get a better
looking coin. Even if it takes me the rest of my life.

    10) having collected all denominations of the Barber series - numerous times - and still plugging away on yet another group of sets.
Guess you can't ever just give up collecting, it's no longer a hobby, it's an obsession.

As a personal point, I greatly appreciate our Hosts allowing these Forums and therefore letting friendships to flourish on their site.
Without this Message Board Feature , I seriously doubt I would have had the drive to collect to the extent that I have.

May we remember those who have come and gone from these Forums with great love and respect. I miss too many to list.

Inactive members are also missed and I try to touch base with them as well. Life plays many tricks on us and throws us many
curve balls. Let's hope we remember the good times we've had here and wish all good health, great cherry picks on eBay
( Stone is my all time hero when it comes to cherry picks ) and good comraudery all around.

As David Hall keeps saying: But most importantly, Have Fun with your Coins !
