Ripping 1979 Topps baseball this afternoon.

I am going to rip this 1979 Topps wax tray later on. I had this on BST forum for $85 a couple of days ago and then took it off last night. Lets see if somebody missed out on some gem mint cards.
Tim (grote) has a hunch there is a $10k Ozzie rookie in the middle pack. If that is true, I will split it with him. (the money, not the card) image

  • I love ripping trays! I've always done extremely well. Ripped a couple '79 fb trays a couple months ago and pulled 2 PSA 9 Earl Campbells. Hopefully you get good sequencing
    It never leaves you...

All is properly aligned! Cards are in the World Series and Ozzie needs to make an appearance! Good luck!

You should probably just split the card -- he may not wanna part with his half. image

    Good stuff Snuffy!

They are able to breathe now. I'm pretty excited here. Even if I strike out, it still is worth ripping them.

I love the smell of packs from a wax tray--they still have that bubblegum smell preserved!!

I still have one of those "Topps Super Sport Card Lockers" - I wonder if that's worth anything.

Ugh. Never mind. Just looked it up on EBay.

Good luck with the rip! Never personally opened a wax tray. Never saw them at all growing up.

Growing up, the place I used to see them was in the Supermarket when I went shopping with my mom. They were in the gum/candy aisle. I never remember seeing them at the local candy store ... they probably took up too much counter space.

This is going to be fun!! I love watching these. 1979's are my favorites!! This will also curb my itch to rip a pack myself.

Alright guys, the packs are open.
The centering was about 50/50. Some very nicely centered and some OC, but better than I expected.
Not 1 single HOFer. (sorry Tim.)
Corners were very nice. Maybe 2 cards with a dinged corner.
Registration was off on a few of them.

No regrets on opening it though. I enjoyed it and it brought back memories for me. I will post the cream of the crop in a minute.

The Champ Summers looks like it has a shot at a 10. The others are nice, but that Champ is a great looking card.

Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.
  • Wow that's great centering, especially for 79's.

That's great centering on for that tray. Any chance you have another from the same case? - Just a random thought. : )

Sorry you didn't get better players, but the ones you posted are great looking cards. Unfortunately, that Champ Summers in a TEN, believe it or not, has a VCP of only $14.00! Thanks for sharing.

Lol...that's depressing Doug. Yeah no low pops in the bunch.

This is the only wax tray I had. Wish I had another to bust.

I thought I remember a few months ago, a facebook post on the BBCE page that they had acquired a substantial amount of 1979 trays. To my knowledge, these have yet to surface on their website for sale yet. I was able to get one at the National. I'm getting tempted to rip it after seeing this thread :-)

I believe they sold them all at $100 a pop. No question now price floor on these is approaching that level, retail.

    good one
  • Nice centering! Thanks for sharing.

BTW I noticed that you put the cards in savers without penny sleeves. I have gone back and forth on this, any particular reason? Anyone have the final answer?

I agree on the price floor. Its amazing how these (trays) have appreciated in price over the past year!

I just cant bring myself to open mine!!

Mintmoon, I used to use sleeves with toploaders, but I don't use them with Card Saver 1s.
IMO, the sleeve sticks out like a sore thumb in a CS1. Distracts me from the cards appearance. It wasn't a problem with the top loaders because the sleeves were almost the same width as the top loader. It looked like part of the holder in a way.
So, to answer your question...it's just for aesthetics.

I saw these at the supermarkets in PA in '79 as well. I also remember seeing 1976 wax trays at the local ice cream shop as well. Wish I had bought them!
  • What's wrong with the others that only the champ looks like a ten
