Lafayette Dollar Repuched A - Known Variety??

WindycityWindycity Posts: 3,529 ✭✭✭✭✭
While taking images of this Lafayette Dollar I noted what must be a repunched A - the second A in AMERICA. Here are images of the coin and closeups of the A. Welcome opinions about whether this is a repunched A and would like to know if it is a know variety?

I think I have found the answer... checking Heritage auction archives, I see the DuVall 2-C Variety - image shows the same repunched A.

Yes, the last A in America is recut, as is the last S in States.
It seems to be a 2-C. I think.

Because the Lafayette was going to be a limited run, they did not bother to make complete hubs for the obverse and reverse, but made the dies the old-fashioned way with central device punches and individual letter punches.

There are only five varieties of Lafayette Dollars with four obverse dies (1-4) and 5 reverse dies (A-E). The associated DuVall numbers are 1A, 1B, 2C, 3D, & 4E. Last time I checked there were only two 4Es known to exist. The diagnostic for your coin, DuVall 2-C are:

Obverse Die 2: The second obverse die is most easily identified by the re-punched second "S" in STATES and the position of the A in DOLLAR.

Reverse Die C: The tip of the first lower leaf is over the "9" in 1900 and the lower of the 14 leaves lie flat against the stem which is shorter and curved down. Shown below is a closeup of the branch and date.

Personally, I have always found that it is much simpler to attribute Lafayette Dollar varieties by the reverse only.

My coin is certainly a 2-C. Thanks for the help.
