New eBay category - Virtual Currency

MWallaceMWallace Posts: 4,344 ✭✭✭✭✭
eBay has just added a new category under Coins & Paper Money. It's titled "Virtual Currency". That's new to me. There are no lots listed as of yet. What is virtual currency?

I would assume this is a section for BitCoins.

Don't think it has anything to do with my 2 hour phone talk to eBay yesterday but...

I bought 5 of the CNMI "Legal Tender" $20 replicas of the St. Gaudens back in 2004, the
ones without "COPY" stamped on the reverse. I gave three away as gifts, sold one on eBay
last February, and just yesterday, decided to list the last one.

I put it under their own categories of Coins and Paper Money>Coins: US>Novelty and
Coins and Paper Money>Exonumia>Fantasy Issue Coins

But no matter what I put for the listing header, I kept getting referred to their page telling
me "No Replicas or Reproduction coins are allowed". Evidently, my use of the word "COPY" had
something to do with it even tho I'd used that word in the previous sale. I went back and forth,
back and forth with this lady and no matter what I said, I couldn't convince her that all I was doing
was using their own category options to list this item for what it was.

My 2 main arguments were that I had already sold one using the exact same categories only 7
months ago (which she looked up and verified) and that I was using their own appropriate
categories to list this item. She put me on hold several times and always came back saying I
wasn't allowed to list a Replica or Reproduction coin and I had to continuously ask "Why do you have
these categories if you can't list an example of same?" I was on hold longer then we actually talked, so
I started playing with different variations of my header and after three attempts, got it to accept
and load, including the word COPY.

It was as if suddenly somebody or some part of their system said "ok, let it go". Anyway, like others
have suggested, this added category may be for Bitcoins but it is my understanding that at least in
California, Bitcoins are considered legal currency (who accepts them...or not, is another story). So
Virtual Currency may have a different meaning to eBay and I can't imagine its targeted listings.

Thanks for the link Zoins. This is my OP from 2004 and I used the same
one in my eBay listing as well as the BST I posted.

Bitcoin is no longer the only virtual currency.

They are essentially electronic only currency, however since bitcoins creation there have been physical bitcoin coined. However, the by far predominant means of bitcoin exchange is electronic. They all use cryptography to help secure the currency and transactions. That doesn't mean bitcoin haven't been lost to theft, and some have been simply lost as the info needed to retrieve them have been lost.

The new category is reserved strictly for the FED to sell government debt on ebay. image

Well, I do wonder. Other than the physical strikes, why would anyone transact a virtual currency exchange on such a public forum. The types that use virtual currency usually want to avoid any Empirial entanglements.

Just another example of eBay hypocrisy; they allow virtual currency but not the selling/sending of electronic files. For example, they do not allow someone to auction a PDF the seller has to burn the file to a CD-R and mail said disc to the buyer. I think they do this to collect fees on shipping labels. Also easier to track that way, as they can't track emailed files sent off-site. I wonder how they are going to track virtual currency sales. I suspect it will have to be a certificate of some sort that is mailed to the buyer.

I find that a great deal of people tend to over pay for items on ebay.

Maybe by listing your various digital/virtual currencies, you are hoping that someone would pay above market value for them.

    --- Or,

This could be a way that someone has "buyer security" knowing that transactions recorded, much like USPS packages w/ tracking ect,

Iin the event that the seller doesn't make good, you now have a charge back option through Paypal.

    Just my 2 bitcents

It's all about what the people want...

8 sales since 2008. 1 Neg feedback. Located in Turkey. All buyers have less then
    85 feedbacks.

On top of all that, I still don't know what he's selling, even after reading the entire listing!

those buyers bought 0.01BTC (0.01 bitcoin), which is the bitcoin money.

that seller's active listing is a different product, bitcoin creation software (a/k/a bitcoin mining software). google bitcoin mining for more info.
