Opinion - Classic Half Eagle

I am considering purchasing a 1838 Classic Head Half Eagle in PCGS AU53. Would it be improper for me to reference a link to the dealer's site to observe the coin. The image is in excess of 50K bytes and will not upload here. Thanks

The image is too large - over the site's 50K limit. I have know way to size it down.

You can upload it through tinypic.com. It gives you the option to resize it there.

Hard to tell from those pictures, but the surfaces look decent. It looks accurately graded. My only concern are the tick marks under the eagles head.

Would those not just be contact marks?
  • I like the color. Suggests it hasn't been dipped in a long time.

But, how is the luster, do you know?
  • Unfortunately, all I have to go on is the photos. The dealer is being straight with me. He describes is as a nice, original coin, with some remaining luster. I don't get the impression he is trying to oversell it.

Looks more 45-50 to me in the pics.
Not a hard coin to find in major auctions.
Btw the seller tends to send all coins to cac.
  • i think it is a solid 50. Just my opinion.

    Dagman:

Perhaps you could use a few of my images to compare color, grade variations and the like. Both of my coins are at the higher end of their grade range. Your potential buy falls between these grades.

    GOOD LUCK!

    This coin is CAC'd

  • Thanks Labelman. Nothing beats a side by side, especially against coins that have CAC'd. I am feeling a little better on the coloration. I don't know if this coin will CAC but I might try it.

my opinion is that it was cleaned a long time ago. it's market acceptable however. the only thing that concerns me about it is the grayish appearance of some of the highpoints. could it have been heated at some point? I don't know if it would cac. it reminds me a of coin I once had that I think was heated.

Looks OK, but not PQ because of the number of small marks, which is typical of an AU53 grade. Classic Head gold is loosely graded and AU50-55 usually has only a small amount of luster in protected areas of the letters and stars. My icon coin is an 1838 PCGS AU58 purchased from Doug Winter, a high end 58 that could have gone 62. CHG is also difficult to evaluate from an image, I have found. Make sure you know the return policy, and if you like it in person, go for it!
