So what's your worst... Oops? (Redemption Version)

As a follow up to this thread about losing/dropping coins, here's an Oops story with a 17 year old happy ending.

We have auction catalogs going back to late 80's or so. They take up a lot of space in our small office and quite frankly, we're probably going to clean house soon and dispose of the unimportant ones. We keep them because we rarely (and I mean rarely...as in maybe once every year or two) refer to an old catalog. A few years ago I actually needed to look up something in what was I think a 1993 Bowers catalog. I find the catalog and am flipping to the lot I wanted to look up and come across an 1873 Two Cent piece in a flip! It was between the pages that contained that particular Two Cent lot listing. Obviously at some point back in 1993, someone had the catalog and coin on their desk and accidentally closed the catalog on the coin.

The thing had so much PVC it looked like it was dug out of a swamp. I do believe we believe we were able to revive the coin, but I do not remember for sure. What a lucky find. We have hundreds of auction catalogs that we never look at, yet the one I do need has a coin it. Missing for 17 years.

Also a lesson to be learned here...don't ever throw an auction catalog away without first shaking it out!

  • When I was a kid I had a raw AU50 1881/0 $5 half lib that I dropped into the back seat recesses of my dads car. Had to dissemble the interior only to find it wedged and scuffed up between to metal clips. Nuts just nuts.
