Gretzky rookie?

Not a hockey guy, so please forgive me if this is a dumb question, but was the 1977-79 Sportscaster card issued before the 1979 OPC/Topps RC? Any thoughts on the current value of a 77-79 Sportscaster PSA-9? Thanks to all who respond.

I don't think this would be considered his rookie card since it was not distributed like normal wax pack sports cards. These were only available through a mail order subscription.

Still a great card none the less.. I would guess 300ish for a PSA 9 but that is purely a guess..

First, it really depends on what nation's issue it is. I'll assume you're talking about the printed in Italy/distributed in North America version which is the most common one; that is easily a $600 card and could bring almost $1,000 if you happen to get 2 people bidding on it at the same time, though I'd really stick with the $600 number for reference. If you had a Finnish one in a PSA 9, you'd have no problem getting double what you would for the Italy version. I really am not certain how many of the different varieties of Sportscasters included the Gretzky in their set. Theoretically, if one was printed in the Dutch set and it was graded a PSA 9, I think it would sell for $3,000 or more.

That's safe to say, for sure. I don't have VCP info, but I have watched sales on this particular card enough to have a good idea of where it should be.
