Question about Submitting to PCGS

Does anyone ever write a note on the submission form for the graders? Or send along any documentation?
or cite a source or reference?

Do graders see the notes? or extra material?

I have a coin that looks like environmental damage, but is really from rusted dies according to reference materials. Do I assume the graders are familiar with almost all coins submitted, or would be able to tell the difference? It seems that some documentation would be helpful?

I was talking to customer service, and they indicated that the graders do not see the actual submission form, but how about accompanying material?

Be interested to hear from PCGS also.

Thanks.

Sounds like Customer Service has given you the answer. As much as we might wish they'd take our input; I don't think it's a big surprise that they attempt to protect the graders from any outside influence.

Rusted dies are not uncommon. Do you want to share with us?

The graders only see the coin.

I am sure they are aware of rusted dies

  • I have often submitted accompanying documentation when requesting that a provenance or "pedigree" be listed on the certification label. This is typically the description and photographs from the auction catalog, in which the piece was originally sold (as part of the named collection). I have also included descriptions and photographs from applicable references, when requesting variety attribution. I have had excellent results when I have supplied the necessary documentation, which I have been told is reviewed when PCGS personnel assign the provenance and/or variety.
