Any experiences filing a USPS damaged goods claim?

I sold a raw card on Ebay for $198 recently. Never mind the fact that it took 6 weeks (First Class Insured) to travel 3 states. The package was bent all over and the card was nicked on 2 corners. Current value probably about $50 - $75. I provided Ebay sales page, Paypal sales and refund page and even threw in the tracking record to highlight their efficiency.image

How have these been resolved for you? thanks for any input, Tom

    Hello Tom,

Since we're talking about a good chunk of change; the USPS will probably want the packaging and everything to see if it conforms to their standards. I hope this was not a bubble mailer. I think we need a few more details. Do you have the entire package back in your possession? I hope this works out for you.

  • I've had a good experience with USPS damage claims. I filled out the form online, took a few pictures and added a hyperlink to an Ebay auction to prove "Value".

In about two weeks, USPS paid me more than what I asked for...

    Good luck to ya!

Well that sounds very good lfa2mfg. Question for you --- did your damaged goods have any residual value?

Yes, it was a bubble mailer. I did have cardboard on both sides of a top loader.

The local inspector took my paperwork and sent it to St Louis and said they will contact me directly.
  • Yes - I believe they did. I got a Jay Publishing set in the plastic (Cincy Reds) that I have never seen before or since. Even though the photos had a slight crease, they are one of a kind...and I basically got them for free...

They refunded me a little over $40.00 one time for a chipped BGS case, due to the cost for reholdering being that much when you include shipping and insurance. You'll need documentation of the damage (photos), clearly showing it was caused by handling. In my case, it was a slabbed card in a bubble mailer.

Funny thing is to most people, they could never tell any difference in the card before and after. Even the inspector took a second look and then looked at me wondering where the damage was. But, as we know here, a previously near mint + card with 4 sharp corners, drops significantly in value with simply a nick/tiny bend on 2 corners.

To shed some light, the card is a 1927 Churchman's golf card of Bobby Jones.
