Best buy on BBCE

Wondering what you all think is the best value on BBCE right now. Can be overall or broken up by sport.
My vote in FB was for the 84 topps boxes before they raised the prices from $525 to 575. It still may be with that crop of HOFers (Marino, Elway and the underrated Dickerson). I think 82 is also undervalued with three all time great HOF RC's (LT, Lott and Munoz) and the second year of Montana. Maybe it will never get its due because the star RC's are unglamorous (defensive stars and O-Line).
For baseball I think 83T boxes and 86T boxes. I know the 86 is borderline junk but it is a registry hit and I think just under the wire for pure junk and at $20/box (at last check) the price is really good. I think they just sold the case of 86 they had on their site.
Another question for those who know more about unopened than I do: why is there such variation in what makes a particular manufacturer the most valuable in a given year? For instance 1981-83 it seems like Topps outprices Donruss and Fleer by a wide margin. Then in 84 Topps is the lowest and Donruss the highest valued. Then in 85 Fleer is the highest. Is it simply print run that decided these values or is it something else?
Why are the 81 F and 81 D boxes selling for $50? I know the rookie class that year is not much to speak of (sorry Tim Raines, even though he should be in the HOF), but these are still early 80's boxes. Is it just because of how ugly and bland the designs were?

81 D and 81 F, overproduced!! Plus from prior expierience, you would be luck to get half the cards out of a Donruss pack that are stuck together.
1988/89 Fleer basketball has always seemed overvalued to me. Now $600 a box? The print run was much higher than 86/87 or 87/88. It seems like that box should be $400. Maybe even lower.
83 topps baseball and 84 topps seem like a good value. I think the vending is $55 and $25.
I think with 81-83 Topps vs Donruss or Fleer, the design for some of those Donruss and Fleer years are terrible. The brown border 83 fleer? That's some of the price difference. The cards are kind of blah.
<< <i>I've always been a fan of the late 70's basketball sets from a value perspective. Only 132 cards in a set. A bunch of rookies and second years (parish rookie, dennis johnson rookie, 3rd and 4th year moses malone, walton). Plus Kareem, Maravich, Dr J. The 78/79 box use to be cheaper. I think $300 or $325. But hard to go wrong from a value perspective.

stockton psa 10 less than $100, says it all
Just so happens that millions of us have mothered boxes of 1986 topps commons through the better part of three decades. These kids never seem to grow up and leave the house though.
For reasons unknown, I randomly bought a vending case recently and have not found one, not one, single card worth grading. I did manage about three different migraines cracking it as there are no words to describe the sensory pain of looking at 12000 cards where every one alternates upside down...
Of course, I won a rack case on ebay two days ago, so masochism is alive and well on Long Island...

<< <i>I have probably brought 100k 86 commons to the curb over the years, including 12k last month. I hated the set then and oh do I hate it now.

I got called names when I described opening cases of cards as "torture".
<< <i>'89 Score Football has some great rookies....... Is $300 a good value? >>
I think it's a little high. It does have a fantastic rookie class. I think the print run is relatively high for it to carry that price. Given the values of raw cards and graded cards the break up value of the box is unlikely to equal the value of the box itself. Of course this can be said for a great many unopened boxes.
I actually just picked up 4 boxes of the 89 Pro Set (now that has a giant print run) but it has the same great rookie class. But I just got my 4 boxes from BBCE on one of their eBay auctions. Including shipping it ended up being $60.88. I would rather have my Pro Set series II boxes at $15/box than the Score at $300/box. That's just my opinion though.

<< <i>'82 Football is sold out.......... '76/'77 Basketball is sold out..............'83 Baseball @ $200 looks like a good buy! >>
I agree with you on the 82. I was going to buy a box from them around the time of the last group rip and Steve said somebody had just bought all their boxes the week before. Don't know much about 70's BK. I think if you could score a 1980-81 Topps basketball from BBCE in the $2,000 range that would be a good deal. I also agree on the 83 and as I've stated I think the 86 Topps is a good value for a lower price box.
