Harco Album Question....

ElKevvoElKevvo Posts: 4,139 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a Jeff set in an older Harco album, the vinyl type. The years of the coins are 1938 - 1995 with proofs from 71 onwards. Anyway I have had this for several years and wonder if the vinyl of the album will react with the coins, especially the silver content ones of the 40's. They all seem OK now...I like them in the album as easy to flip through but perhaps I should move them to a Dansco?

Thoughts are appreciated!

If that's an old vinyl album and hasn't PVC'd your coins, you are lucky. I don't know if those were Harco, but I'd be afraid anyway.

They were the old harcos. I think some of the later albums switched to non PVC but they were very brittle. Every old time collection I have seen stored in an old harco was just dripping with green slime!

Those old Harco albums will eventually eat your coins, even if you can't see the damage right now the chemicals in the PVC are leaching onto your coins and will eventually cause you a world of headaches. If you like that style of album, you can get similar ones from a Canadian company, Gardmaster (here's one source). Unlike Harco, the Gardmaster pages and inserts are inert and archival quality.

I bought the unlabeled albums for my clipped cent and off-center dime collections, and hand-wrote the dates. For error coin collections, that style of album is perfect since the whole coin is visible and even non-round coins will fit.

Take the coins out of the PVC album, soak them in acetone to remove the PVC and then rinse them in acetone to fully decontaminate them. Find a safe album to store and display your coins.
