While I didn't purchase this on my trip, for those of you who are card history buffs, I did pick up on Ebay tonight a piece of baseball card history. It's kind of a first for my collection; a 1934 Diamond Stars from the Lionel Carter collection.
If you don't know who Lionel Carter is, this is a good read...

Great article. It has always amazed me that the Wagner was worth so much, even back then. It seems it wouldn't have taken much foresight to figure that other cards would eventually become valuable as well.

George has some really good stuff on the hobby!
Here's another "ad" on Carter and Hoover:
Also: here's a nice perspective the Carters took away about Jefferson Burdick:
Lionel Carter and his wife visited Jefferson Burdick in Syracuse and found him to be a recluse of sorts.
Mrs. Carter: “Jeff was just furious at the prices. He felt that (collecting) was a hobby and not a business. Inserts were given away and not meant to be sold…"
If anyone visits NYC - the Burdick collection is at the Metro Museum of Art in Manhattan.
My own perspective on prices of cards? Back in 1985, I went to a card shop - picked up a few cards that were fairly priced and didn't even consult a price guide. By 1990, I didn't go anywhere without a Beckett in hand.
Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.
There's a group of people who collect "pedigrees" - you've got a piece from one of the pioneers. Congratulations.
Great card. As Mike suggested, I'm one of the LC pedigree type set collectors. Here are a few I have.
Here's one of mine:

That letter is pretty cool.
Nice card Tony, I think I have a LC card that was once in your collection, is this it?
Glad you got one.
