Do wax boxes with an "X" sell at a lower price?

Would you buy wax boxes with an "X"?

Definitely less desirable than non x-out boxes as they were final sale boxes and can be a compilation of packs from various partially sold boxes instead of an original box.

  • Personally, I don't put a big value difference between X-out and clean, non-X boxes. It's so easy to obtain clean empty boxes (some for as little as $5 - $10) and put the packs into them. I'd put a premium on a non x-out box from a sealed case. That's the only way you know for sure that the mix is the way it originally came. Non x-out boxes do look nicer for display and for that reason they should command a small premium but I wouldn't pass on a buy opportunity just because the box top has been marked. JMO

True, but X-Out boxes could have been sequenced before they were shipped back to Topps. Naturally the best boxes are non-x-out's from a sealed case....guaranteed nnot tampered with that way.

I think we're in agreement on this. The point I was making is that non x-out boxes could be sequenced, put together or come originally from an x-out box. Take nothing for granted. Unless the box is from a sealed case that either you saw opened or marked from a sealed case by a reputable company like BBCE, You just don't know. That's why I don't place much difference in price on them as I always assume the box might have been monkeyed with.

On older stuff, I am a little more forgiving. Newer stuff with key inserts is different. I have heard people buying cases, opening packs until they pull the two autos that should be in each box and then selling the remainder of the cards as full partial boxes. If the new boxes are not sealed as they should be, I'm out!

There is a relatively brief window during which Topps marked the lid with the X on top--1982 through 1984 for baseball and football wax and cello boxes, IIRC.

1984-85 Topps hockey boxes show up all the time with the x out on the top too.

I believe I have seen 1981 and 1986 Football with black lines on them (as opposed to X's). Is that the same thing. If not, then what does that mean? Thanks,

That is the equivalent of the X. I don't collect football, so you are likely correct. I have only seen the lids marked on baseball wax and cello boxes from the years 1982 through 1984.

No, not again. Bad experience. It's hard enough to get high quality cards in non-X boxes.

I do think there is a price premium for the non X-out boxes. I would favor buying the non X-out versions. Not sure how it is in baseball, but a lot of the 80's FB boxes I see are tough to get in the non X-out variety. Now that I have a bought some X-out boxes and non X-out boxes in certain years I will likely be waiting to buy non X out versions from now on unless the X out comes at a significant discount.
