1990 Topps baseball pack lineage

I know this has been brought up before, in regards to the Frank Thomas No Name version, but I was wondering if someone can help with pack lineage in terms of what comes out through out the year.

The types of packs are:

wax
wax w/traded
cello
rack
jumbo
vending
factory sets

I believe it has been mentioned that they were only being found in wax packs. I am assuming that the Frank Thomas' were printed early in the year. Wax packs I assume are the first to be released. Are cello packs made at a different point in the year? Racks? Can anyone lay down a type of lineage of how Topps releases various packs throughout the year?

There are also the alternate wrapper wax packs (Michigan test for 1990 if you will).

Did they do this with 1990 as well? (the Michigan test)

They look like this -- I have 1989 and 1990 Topps in this wrapper.

  • ok. Yeah. I am seeing these now on eBay. The boxes are wider like a cello box, but they are standard wax pack card count. Thanks for the heads up on these. I did not know they made them for 89 and 90. Now I am suspicious that 1990 also made wax packs in cello style plastic, if they did them in 89 and 91.

Is there something about Michigan demographically that causes Topps to do test runs there? Seems that every time I hear "Topps" and "Test" together, Michigan is involved. Not trying to be funny, really curious about this.

    Appreciate today-

    Bill

I think officially only the 1983 box is considered a "Michigan Test Pack". I would think the later years are just called as such as the packaging is similar, but I think it was a move for Topps in that direction and is not segregated to Michigan only. Also, I think Topps must have a printing site in Michigan.

There were also different ways that the wax packs were distributed besides in 36 count boxes. I believe Rookiewax found his NNOF's in a retail display case. Something similar to this Donruss display Donruss Display

That's right I remember the blister packs from k-mart. Sorry I was reading the thread and wanted to posts some thoughts image I don't remember the blister packs being sold anywhere else besides K-mart actually. They were plastic with 3 different cells of cards. Sort of like a hard plastic rack-pack. I had some of those league leaders cards when I was a kid and they are very rare and condition sensitive. I believe they only printed them for 2 years. In 1989 they were red and in 1990 they were green. I wonder if PSA grades those..gonna go check the pop reports. I'm sure mint copies are very hard and gem-mint 10's would be next to impossible. Centering sucked and they scratched easy because of the gloss. Sorry for the rant it just brought back memories. lol

Yeah, the Batting Leaders cards were only available in those K-Mart blisters. It's a 22-card set of the highest career batting average hitters that were current at the time. They did the set in 1990 as well.
