Tiger woods golf ball?

Friend of mine found this playing at the Champions course PGA National. Any chance it was Tiger's ball?

If it says "Tiger" on the left side of the first pic, then I guess it could be. That's what his say.

It does say tiger on the ball.

If it's a NikeOne TW, it probably is. If it's anything else it's not.

How far from the tee was it found?

You never know but I doubt it considering pros rarely loose their balls. It ain't cheap to play there, so I wouldn't be surprised if a golfer bought Nike tour balls, put Tiger's name on it, and fantasized (in a non-sexual way) being him on the course.

  • I doubt it is his ball as there is no line drawn on it for putting. Plus, it looks too scuffed and worn to be from a professional.

I do that all the time but I have to also pretend my 240 yard drives went 340.

Tiger is actually stamped on the side of the ball. Can you buy these balls?

Personally, I doubt it, but it's possbile. That ball looks too scuffed to have been one he used in a tournament and the crowds are too large to let one go missing for long. Perhaps a warm up round "junk" ball, but I don't see him using a ball in that condition even then.

Supposedly, Tiger was at the course a few days earlier practicing. The ball was found on hole 15 in the bank next to the water.

Don't know if the stamped version is available at retail stores but you can customize them.

I know someone that use to engrave "SEE 'YA!" on his.

It is possible Tiger practiced there, hit a ball into the water, and then it washed ashore a couple days later. Unlikely but the possibility does exist.

edited again: the grounds crew at PGA courses typically remove balls from water hazards every morning.

  • "Having my name stamped on the ball is more than just a nice touch. I actually draw a line through my name with a marker and use that as an alignment aid. The line also reminds me to keep my head still until the ball is on its way."

He must not do that all of the time because occasionally the camera will zoom in on his ball and you can see his name (and no line).

    They do? Why?

Maybe that's why he doesn't putt as good as he used to..... or maybe the line is on the other side of the ball.

I guess it could be his ball, but I doubt it.

PGA quality courses spend more on their grounds crew than a local muni. It's their job to manicure and maintain top quality on a daily basis because it's expected from the membership, hence the hefty fees.

OK, but you must be talking about removing golf balls in shallow water that can be seen, right? The others are only removed maybe once or twice a year.

I would be surprised if a PGA course didn't have divers retrieve balls at least once a week.

For a typical muni, once or maybe twice a month. Second hand balls are a *big* money generator.

Sure, but what's the hurry? Why dive for golf balls once a week when you can do it every few months instead? They can still sell them.

Here's a guy that dives for golf balls at TPC Twin Cities, and he pulled out 10,000 in one day. So, apparently they don't do it very often. video

I worked groundscrew at a golf course during college and I don't know how accurate this is. The public course I worked at did it maybe once a year (the head grounds keeper always kept the balls to sell). Even at private courses, I can't imagine them fetching golf balls out of water hazards more than two or three times a year. Most of the second hand golf balls are picked at the end of a season when they brush-hog any overgrown fescew.

Keep in mind, private courses usually see only 10% of the play as public courses, there really is no need to dig out the golf balls from water hazards.

It's my fault for not considering regions. It's the typical MO for courses I've played in Texas, Phoenix, and Vegas. Now thinking about it, I'm sure they're not nearly as frequent in areas like MN.

Did you happen to find that streaker in the woods? Kind of NSFW
  • There are a few companies where diving for golf balls is their entire business. I got into the habit of buying some of their top notch balls (called one hit wonders) and other than the occaisional id mark, they look like they came straight from the box. Better to pay $24/dozen than $48 retail for brand new.

So they frequent diving would not surprise me, depending on course usage.
