Very nice coin for a 1899 and fully struck at that! Most '99-P mint coins that I've seen are very baggy or just plain unattractive. I think that the light scratch on the cheek keeps this one from 65. My guess is MS64. If you got any better than a 64 you did well IMHO.
While the reverse is very nice, the obverse is quite baggy. It does have a very nice strike. However, I think the coin tops out at an MS63, or perhaps a 63+, but nothing more.

got it back in hand today and I still cannot figure out how this coin was cleaned??? I will be returning the coin to the seller who has already informed me that I will receive a full refund, but I really wanted to add this baby to my set registry

I realize it is difficult to grade from pictures, but how on earth are you all seeing this better than an MS63? There is a large mark on the cheek, in addition to all the chatter on the obverse.
I'm going to buck the trend here and say that I actually agree with PCGS on this one being cleaned. Something about the luster just doesn't seem right.

Erik, what grade did you buy this as? >>
Totally agree here, the cheek is not full and has many bagmarks. The strike could carrry it to a 64 but that should be the top. As to the grade it received I'm not really seeing any obvious signs of cleaning, and while the luster in these pics does have a soft or satin look that may just be the lighting/camera work. Did you give it an acetone bath before you sent it in? The toning makes me think the coin was in an old small anacs holder and sometimes coins in holders develop a haze which can get it bagged.
If the obverse is a 62 and the reverse is a 68 the coin will grade 62. Jeez.... Lustre is satiny rather than blasty like one expects 99P's. My guess is superfine hairlines

Yes. And that cheek scratch is a killer. MS62 was my grade before you posted.

I overpaid at $306.00 I think, but I have already returned the coin to seller for full refund (I didn't even crack it out before returning) . I used this coin in my 8 voucher submissions so I am out a bit but nothing to cry about
<< <i>So, the seller guarantees the coins he sells on ebay will grade at PCGS? That's a very nice seller then.
I do see the 14 day return policy, but I also know that it usually takes PCGS a few days longer than that to get the grades out. >>
yeah I bundled about 4 or 5 coins over 2 weeks from seller, whom shipped all at once... I was certainly late in getting it returned to the seller and I couldn't care less about wether or not the seller guarantees his coins grade at PCGS or anywhere else for that matter. For me...65 with a possible plus - if killer in hand and the Obv. marks less disturbing.

hard to tell from those diffused, small images. we need real images as well as the cert number to see max images for close-up surface examination.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I do not see the cleaning or over dipping.
